A BOLTON MP has voiced her concerns over the Conservative government’s deal with the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP).
The Tories continued negotiations with the DUP yesterday to secure support for their minority government, after Theresa May failed to secure an overall majority at last week’s General Election.
Yasmin Qureshi, who was re-elected as the Labour MP for Bolton South East last week, has warned that the deal could jeopardise the Good Friday Agreement, which requires the UK Government to be an impartial broker between parties in Northern Ireland.
She said: “Leaving aside the DUP’s policies, the Good Friday Agreement states that the UK government must be a neutral arbiter when it comes to the Northern Ireland parties.
“Mrs May is jeopardising the whole of the Northern Ireland peace process for her own selfish gain.”
Bolton West’s Tory MP, Chris Green, said that an arrangement with the DUP was a “viable” option for the government.
Ms Qureshi added that the entire Labour Party must now unite behind Jeremy Corbyn, after he defied pollsters’ predictions.
