A VETERAN MP is calling for a ban on the use of wild animals in circuses.
Sir David Crausby is one of 20 MPs from six different political parties to sign a motion in the House of Commons asking the Government to introduce a ban as quickly as possible.
Six years ago, MPs voted to support a ban on wild animals in circuses, but the Government has not brought forward any legislation.
The Bolton North East MP said: “A clear consensus has developed among MPs, the public, animal protection agents and veterinary experts that the travelling circus is not a place for wild animals.
“The Prime Minister recently said she’s open to ideas, I can’t understand why her Government keep stalling on this issue when there is such broad support.”
The ban was included in the manifestos of Labour, Plaid Cymru and the Greens at June’s General Election. The Tories have supported a ban in the past, and it was in their 2010 and 2015 manifestos.
