SIR David Crausby MP has asked Prime Minister Theresa May for reassurance football fans travelling to this summer’s World Cup in Russia will be safe.

He had the opportunity to quiz the premier in the House of Commons at Prime Minister’s Questions yesterday.

His question comes in the wake of the poisoning of Sergei and Yulia Skripal in Salisbury, in which Russia has been heavily implicated.

The Labour MP for Bolton North East said: “The Prime Minister was right to prevent members of the Royal Family and government ministers from attending the football World Cup in Russia.

“But what has been done to safeguard everyday football fans in what is already, in my view, a very dangerous place to watch football, even before the event in Salisbury.

“What advice has been given to travelling English supporters, many of whom have already bought their tickets? And is she confident that there will be adequate co-operation between our police and the Russian police to protect English fans?”

The Prime Minister said Mr Crausby had raised a ‘very important issue’ about fan safety.

She continued: “The police are working very closely and looking into what arrangements would be in place to support football fans that do go to Russia and the foreign office will be carefully monitoring the situation.”
