A union jack recovered from the wreckage of the World Trade Center in the wake of the 9/11 terror attacks is to go on display in Greater Manchester.

Imperial War Museum (IWM) North is putting it on display to mark the 10th anniversary of the terror attacks.

The flag was presented to the UK on the first anniversary in 2002.

The museum was the first UK building designed by architect Daniel Libeskind. He went on to design the master plan for the rebuilding of Ground Zero.

The two-metre wide flag will go on display in the museum's In the Spotlight exhibit from Saturday.

The museum will also mark the anniversary with a transatlantic memorial event on Sunday at 16:00 BST, linking up with Wake Forest University in North Carolina for a live performance of two specially composed orchestral pieces.

Jim Forrester, director of IWM North, said: "The decade has given us time to reflect at length on the motivation and background to the attacks and yet, even with the benefit of more hindsight, it remains the most bewildering of events.

"How did the world come to that point and has it improved since?

"As we create a live link across the Atlantic at 4pm on 11 September, we aim to encourage our visitors to reflect on this and to think about the lives lost on that awful day 10 years ago."
