Wanderers in Europe
Fan needed staples for head gash`
INJURED: Matthew Mather, aged 17, of Horwich, with his blood-stained Wanderers scarf
INJURED: Matthew Mather, aged 17, of Horwich, with his blood-stained Wanderers scarf

A College student, who was one of 17 Wanderers fans needing hospital treatment following baton charges by police at the UEFA Cup tie with Atletico Madrid, spoke of his ordeal yesterday.

Matthew Mather, aged 17, of Horwich, is a construction student at Wigan College. He travelled to last Thursday's match in Madrid with his brother, Anthony, and four friends.

As a result of the police action, Matthew needed eight staples to a wound on his head. Matthew, of Old Vicarage Road, said: "I was hit on the arm at least four times and then I got whacked on my head.

"The police just charged at everyone and I couldn't get out of the way.

"There were people everywhere. It was really overcrowded and they were just whacking everyone."

From BWFC site:

Bolton Wanderers Official Club Statement
Posted on: Mon 25 Feb 2008

BOLTON WANDERERS Football Club remains highly concerned about the aggressive nature of the policing experienced by a section of the Club's travelling support in Madrid on Thursday evening.

This matter is ongoing, and the issue is currently being examined by UEFA.

However, as part of the Club's internal information gathering process, Bolton Wanderers wishes to invite fans to share their personal experience with the Club by emailing feedback@bwfc.co.uk

I would urge all fans affected to contact BWFC and let us not rest until we get answers and action on this matter.

Quite appropriate...

Can someone please tell me why uefa were waiting for the referees report before commenting? What relevance as this got?

Stalling tactics Woolli!

Great quote from Platini:

"Zero tolerance
UEFA President Michel Platini recently reiterated his policy of zero tolerance towards violence and racism in stadiums, calling on clubs to help UEFA by implementing a system of qualified stewards and by only recognising supporters' associations which clearly and unambiguously reject violence and racism."

Does this apply to Police too? There is some great stuff on the UEFA site if you want a laugh. Under stadium safety etc.
