Now there will be 17 takeaways in one Farnworth street

A NEW takeaway is to open on a street lined by food outlets.

Residents battling against the plan to transform a vacant office into a fish and chip shop lost their fight when the plans were approved by Bolton Council.

It means Market Street in Farnworth will now have 17 takeaway food outlets.

The decision was made at a meeting of Bolton Council's planning committee which heard there were more than 400 objections to the plan.

Two petitions, with a total of 415 signatures, and one letter of objection cited concerns about another business being shut during the day, parking, litter and anti-social behaviour.

Nadia Morris, who lives in Church Street and owns a sandwich shop on Market Street, spoke against the proposal.

She said: "Many people remark about the closed shops and they don't attract shoppers.

"One more shuttered shop will only add to the regrettable situation."

There are already 16 takeaways on Market Street and 23 empty shops.

Cllr Margaret Rothwell cited concerns about this and said: "People say Farnworth is nothing but takeaways.

"I'm not happy about another one going on Market Street and I don't think the people of Farnworth will be either."

Planning policy allows up to four hot food takeaways within a 25 metre radius. The fish and chip shop will be the third in the area.

Sarah Williams, who owns the premises, spoke to support the application She said: "We are planning to open during the day.

"The shutters will be see through and coloured as opposed to galvinised ones. This property has been empty for over a year and our only use for it is as a takeaway."

Cllr Anthony Connell said: "Opening during the day is more than you can say for a lot of takeaways."

Cllr Andy Morgan added: "It's good to see an empty property being taken on. Otherwise do we let it stay empty and bring the area down further?"

The first floor of the property will be used as living accommodation and a two-storey extension built at the back.
