BOLTON has some of the untidiest streets in the North-west, a new survey has found.

Research carried out by the GMB Union puts the town near the bottom of a national league for street cleanliness.

Statistics based on a report by the Audit Commission show 19 per cent of the borough's streets were assessed as dirty in the 12 months to March 31, 2007.

Bolton was placed in equal 36th position out of 43 councils in the North-west.

The cleanest area was Carlisle, while the dirtiest was Stockport.

Across the UK, the figures showed a marked improvement on those for the previous 12 months, with the number of clean streets up 14 per cent.

Paul McCarthy, GMB Regional Secretary, said: "Overall we are seeing an improvement in street cleanliness across England and Wales.

"This is good news for our environment and testament to local councils and their street cleaners."

Re: fed ups' comments what a joke! I live in a multi ethnic area of Bolton and haven't witnessed what he/she describes, I do know however that when I walk through areas not as highly populated by
BME people I'm 'fed up' of seeing dog **** all over the pavement.
Fed up must think this to be fine and normal as they make no mention of this.

Yes we do pay for the Council to clean up after us, but sureley that is a shameful view to take. The rubbish is put there by Joe Public and it is time we all took responsibility for our streets. Simple answer don't drop litter, don't use the streets for fly tipping and don't feed the flipping pigeons. Maybe then our Council Tax will come down and the Council will have more resources to deal with issues like potholes etc.
Bolton Council do a sterling job trying to keep on top of the rubbish, but are alas fighting a losing battle until we all change our views on who is responsible.

Well put.

Our big litter problem is down, pretty much fairly and squarely, to students.
