Gordon Brown in surprise Bolton visit

Prime Minister Gordon Brown made a surprise visit to Bolton at lunchtime.

He was on the campaign trail for Thursday's local elections, with the tightly fought Bolton Council being regarded a crucially important by all the major parties.

He met up with the town's Labour election candidates and paid a visit to the pioneering Tonge Moor UCAN Centre opened last year and a base for Police Community Support Officers.

The centre is also an informal meeting place for the community where people can get information about jobs, report policing concerns, take part in educational activitis or even just drop in for a cup of tea.

Mr Brown prasied the success it has had in bringing the community together and the part it has played in helping police be more visible in the area.

"It seems to be doing a great job and giving people more confidence," he said.

Local residents told him how fear and distrust between the elderly and youth in the area is being reduced through projects which actively bring the two groups together.

After meeting the residents Mr Brown dodged journalists' questions about his leadership which had been brought into question in media reports over the weekend.

Would have had to have been surprised, if people would have know he would probably have got stoned.

Like much of the rest of Tonge Moor.

I agree with "Gazz_Ball" he should have been stoned with the hardest bricks around. He's just a smarmy sick looking, legal robber. I not surprised that he kept his visit quiet. What a coward.

having to sneak into a labour stronghold shows how popular he is. lets hope people wake up and smell the roses and get rid of these idiots who have dragged the country down for the last 11 years.

Just shows how delicate the situation is politically for Labour in the Bolton area. I can see Ruth Getting the Order Of The Boot in a general election.
I'll see how difficult I can make life for the local party apperacheks.

That sounds like the very same sentiment that was abundant, shortly before John Major's demize.

I'm sure it will be different this time though.

Just shows how desperate the Labour Party is in Bolton if they feel the need to bring the even more desperate Prime Minister into town to bolster their even more desperate campaign. Good luck Mr Morris and his puppets, you will need it.

I'll just vote for whoever will keep the tories out. In my area that means voting for Ruth Kelly in the national elections - she just happens to be Labour. In the locals I will be voting for the Lib Dems. If I thought that the independants had a chance I would vote for one of them, as I think that there is no place for party politics in local government..but it's not going to happen. I'm not pro-labour, or pro-lib dem, I'm anti-tory (I didn't like them last time they were in, and leopards don't change thier spots!)

If Gordon Brown was at my front door I wouldn't bother opening it.

The only problem we have is that there isn't an alternative. I don't buy into Camerons world of spin.

i agress with JCB to a certain extent "they all **** in the same pot" but at least the conservatives have had a stream of shadow ministers visiting bolton over the past couple of years and i think cameron has visited at least 4 times. i for one am going to give the conservatives a go last this time,if we don't then it more of the same. like i said at least they visit outside the election period.

Conservatives - privitised every single industry in this country and have basically killed this country and led to the current credit crunch - i.e. it has made this country a credit lifestyle where people live beyond their means!!!! And yet, it was Labour that exaggerated it even further!!!!

LibDems have not been in power since at least 1911 - and as such an very unkown quantity that also falls in the same brackets as the others!!!

I would liked to have thanked Gordon "Bottler " Brown for his parties continued effort to get rid of the Working Class! Screwing the working man with the ludicrous amount of fuel duty we pay (Under Labour my weekly fuel bill for my car has more than Doubled!)* Gordon Blair sorry Brown you will be one of the shortest serving PM's in History and I for one can't wait to see the back of you, why? because you have forgotten the common man that the Labour party always courted in the past. your immigration policy means that the country is being flooded with Free-loaders that have taken housing away from the people of "This once great" country, Im English and proud to be English but now I have to look around to see who is around when I want to comment so that I don't offend anyone, all this in my own country! David Cameron when he becomes the next PM will honur GB for his services to the Tory party! Cameron is not my choice but at least he isn't Brown!
*just for the tree huggers out there, I will get on a bus when it comes to my front door, waits at the shop to buy my papers, keeps me warm, and doesn't have swearing ignorrant kids on it (also the smell of Urine to be removed) and drops me off outside my place of work

Bolton Blogger: When will the likes of you stop playing the same old record. labour have been in power for 10 years and labour ave not reversed any of the things that you blame the conservatives for. labour and labour alone are responsible for the state of this country in 2008 not the conservatives who lost the election in 1997.

I can tell you did not READ all of the comment as I did express that Labour exaggerated the problems!!!!!!!!!!!

I suggest that you re-read my comment, and then give an apology!

When was the last time you caught a bus.

Did you know that thr NEW buses no longer smell, have CCTV installed and beams direct back to the bus garages and on bto the police if needs be. On certain routes they are very frequent (less than 10 minutes between buses) and the on-board environment controls are the best one can get, at this moment in time.

Do not be ignorant of the bus - try it sometime!!!

It's such a pity that the Labour party has come to this situation. It is true they have lost their way as far as the working man goes.
I recently wrote to Labour Party HQ. explained my feelings regarding the EU Referendum How the people of this country had been lied to on the voting issue.
There was other issues I explained I was not happy about.
Obviously the Goverment and Labour HQ are totally out of touch with the prospective voters of this country.
It seems to me Gordan Brown has had enough already as PM and is out of his depth.
To me when you see him in the media he looks drawn and stressed.
Perhaps he wants to lose the next General Election, not as daft as it sounds.
As for Ruth Kelly as one of the comments mentioned. Imho she is a complete waste of space and as far as I can see has done nothing for Westhoughton. She is stealing a living as wellas all the perks. The only thing she seems to have any talent at is "Dropping Sprogs". Another perk with all the Family allowance or Tax credits.
I doubt I would ever vote for that twit Cameron so what are we left with ?.

BTW, Ruth Kelly must hold the Record for the Most ministerial post in Parliament and cocked them all up.
They don't know where to put her next. I could suggest somewhere.
