Medical cadets storm into final

9:35am Friday 13th July 2001

YOUNGSTERS from Bexleyheath have made it into the final of a competition to find the best St John Ambulance division in the country.

The Bexleyheath division under-16s and over-16s teams beat all other teams in London to get into the competition against the best 12 teams in Britain for the two age groups.

The finals took place in Fairfield Halls, Croydon, and judges looked at emergency care, nursing care and first aid.

The Bexleyheath division has 70 cadets in total and had been training for the last four months.

Division superintendent Pam Crawford said: “I'm very excited as Bexleyheath is represented in both its older and younger group. This is very unusual but comes from hard work and training.”

Bexleyheath also had the two youngest members, Joanna Alexander, 11, of Pickford Road, Bexleyheath and Stacy Clarke, 11, of Howbury Lane, Lee Green, competing this year.

Stacy's mother Julie Clarke, 35, who is also a member of the Bexleyheath cadets won the award for best individual.

Adam Faith presented the awards which included a trip to New Zealand in 2002 to represent England in the St John Ambulance world finals for the winning cadet group.
