11:32am Thursday 4th January 2001

BIG-HEARTED hospital workers received awards for their volunteering efforts at a ceremony in London.

The volunteer group from Sidcups Queen Marys Hospital, was one of 15 finalists at the first annual Make a Difference Day with The Woolwich awards.

On Make a Difference Day, on October 25, the UKs biggest single day of volunteering, they helped recycle 15,000 tin cans and create a world-breaking ana-can-da snake.

They were finalists in the category for most volunteers involved in a project.

But they were not the only people from Bexley borough to be finalists.

Employees from The Woolwich, in Bexleyheath, who stepped out from behind their desks to transform a summer house into a Wendy house for disabled children at Rainbow Lodge, in Dartford, were nominated in the most outstanding Woolwich project category.

The Woolwich chief executive officer, Lynne Peacock said: It is an honour for the Woolwich to be an active supporter of a campaign like Make a Difference Day.

This project is an example of what can be achieved when ordinary people give time to their community.

More than 25,000 volunteers took part in Make a Difference Day organised by The Community Service Volunteers and there were five winners out of the 15 finalists.

This years Make a Difference Day will be on October 27. Call 0800 284 533 or visit www.csv.org.uk
