A RAILWAY station has received a major revamp — thanks to the hard work of volunteers.

Friends of Westhoughton Station formed at the end of last year because they felt that the site in Church Road, Westhoughton, needed a boost for commuters and visitors to the town.

Nearly nine months later the group of about eight volunteers, who meet every other Sunday, are reaping the benefits of their work.

Yvonne Woolley, a volunteer, said: “We have only been going since around January and a lot of people have commented on it.

“One woman said she thought it was elves doing it as she would come on a Monday and would see the work that had been done.

“We do it for anyone who is coming into Westhoughton and for the children.

“For business people coming into Westhoughton it used to look a mess but the work has made a big difference.”

Volunteers have rid the station of rubbish, dug it up and planted plants donated by residents.

Children visiting The Pottery Studio in Market Street, Westhoughton, have helped brighten up the station by making small animal ornaments and mosaic tiles showcasing Westhoughton’s history by featuring the Olympic torch bearing last year, the Pretoria Pit disaster and the burning of the mill.

The group continues to appeal for volunteers.

Volunteers go to the station every other Sunday for several hours to improve the environment at the station.

People can meet at the station on Sunday from 10am.
