RESIDENTS affected by a food fight which left a trail of eggs and other waste strewn over a road claim rubbish being dumped in their neighbourhood is a constant problem.

A 40-strong gang of men took part in the latest incident, at about 12.30am on Thursday in Bolton Road, Westhoughton, in which the men, who were on a stag do, got out of cars and pelted each other with rubbish.

One resident, who asked not to be named, said a similar incident had happened last August, and that litter has been a long term issue on the road.

She said: "Every morning when we go out we are faced with rubbish and bottles — you name it.

"Last August my grandson was driving down the road, and there were cars stopped everywhere.

"They pelted his car with flour, eggs all kinds of things.

"They should have been made to clean it up."

The men, who were believed to have been on a stag do, threw eggs at houses and left rubbish strewn all over the street in the latest incident last week.

Terrified residents, who said they did not understand what was going on, called the police twice.

Neighbours woke up to food carnage in the street, and professional council cleaning teams had to attend.

Police confirmed the men were on a stag do and, after the matter was reported, officers dispersed them.

Local councillor Martyn Cox said: “This behaviour is intolerable — it upset children and residents.

“The first thing was to get the street cleaned up, but this is criminal behaviour.

“It is now up to the police to provide a proper response."

A spokesman for Bolton Council said the area was regularly cleared up.

He said: "The area is cleaned regularly and we receive very few complaints about litter on this area of Bolton Road.

"A crew went out on the same day we were contacted about the rubbish and cleaned it up.

"The feedback we’ve had from local residents was that they were happy with the speed of service and the standard of the clean-up provided."
