IT is all getting woolly in Westhoughton.

This supermarket trolley has been covered in wool ahead of a "yarn bombing" festival in the town next month.

A replica of the iconic Angel of the North Statue will be decorated as part of the event which will see a whole host of landmarks "yarn bombed".

No object will be safe from the colour bomb as street furniture, parks and shops will all be decorated in eye catching fashion, on July 4 and 5.

Linda James from Rainbow Crafts Group, which is organising the festival, said: “This is our first year of doing a yarn bombing festival and there is a lot of people not quite sure how it works but I am sure once they have seen it, it will really take off.

“We have been planning it for quite a number of months and there have been a lot of people and organisations that have got involved.

“Sacred Heart School has been making a take on the Angel of the North so they are creating an Angel of Westhoughton which is massive which they have made out of ply wood which people will be able to decorate."

The idea of yarn bombing started in Texas, America in 2005 as a creative way of using leftover and unfinished knitting projects and has since spread worldwide.

As well as the street décor and some impressive and unusual installations, there will be a crafts market, a "community royalty procession" and crowning ceremony.

There will also be appearances on the Mill Street stage by The Houghton Weavers, The Travellin' Strings, The George Formby Society and a display of tractors and vintage motorcycles.

The event opens at 11am on Saturday and events will be held throughout the day in The Carnegie Hall and on Market Street and Mill Street car park.

Activities will begin at noon on the Saturday.
