BOLTON West MP Chris Green is urging local people to "use it or lose" amid fears that the area's last remaining college may close.

Mr Green says he has been contacted by Westhoughton Community Learning Centre users who have raised concerns about its future.

The Bolton News reported last week that Bolton College has put the centre under review, saying there is not the demand for their courses — a claim refuted by residents who say there is a need for courses at the centre.

The college is running a consultation to determine what would stimulate demand.

Last year the sessions delivered at the centre, in Central Drive, included art courses, computing for beginners, language provision, and a selection of beauty and complementary therapy courses.

The centre has not been included in this year's Bolton College Community Learning for Adults 2016 brochure, which lists the courses available at Brownlow Fold, Deane and Derby, New Bury community learning centres and the flagship college in Deane Road. There is no mention of the Westhoughton Centre.

The college say this is because it is under review.

Bolton College bosses say that they are keen to hear from residents about what they can do "that is different" and are meeting with community groups.

Mr Green said: "Westhoughton Community Learning Centre is the last college left on our side of Bolton and I know a lot of people, some who I have met myself at the centre, are concerned that it may close like the Horwich college site which is going to have more housing built on it.

"I would encourage anyone interested in keeping the learning centre open to get involved with the consultation and share their views.”

The college has said that it would consider running courses, which are not fundable, if there is a large enough number of individuals and who are happy to pay for it.
