WESTHOUGHTON Rotary Club has been able to increase its donations after a successful year.

At a presentation evening held in Brookfield Hall in Peel Street, the club was able to hand over donations to various groups in which it supports.

Representatives from organisations such as Bolton Hospice, Derian House, Winston’s Wish and Urban Outreach all attended the event and spoke about how the Rotary Club helps its cause.

Jim Yates of Westhoughton Rotary Club said the success of its Christmas Sleigh Tour made the donation increase possible.

Rotary President John Moutrie said: “The story starts each Christmas when we walk the streets, stand outside the supermarkets and visit local pubs and restaurants collecting money from generous people.

“It’s not just the magical look on children’s faces and people’s generosity but also the thought of the local organisations we support which keep us going through cold and rain.”

One of the charities helped by Westhoughton Rotary club is Bolton Hospice which needs £7,000 an hour, 365 days a year, to stay open.

Grace Hopps from the hospice said: “It is only thanks to the fantastic support of the local community and vital contributions like this Rotary cheque that we can continue.”

Each year Westhoughton Rotary donates the proceeds from its Christmas Sleigh collection to local organisations, charities and projects at its presentation evening, which was this year held on March 17.

Stephen Aston of Bolton Bulls said it was thanks to the Rotary Club's crucial financial help that they had been able to keep going while Dave Bagley from Urban Outreach thanked the club for its long association with the organisation, which had enabled it to reach its third year of giving free dinners to school children in summer holidays.

Mr Moutrie added: “We find it humbling to meet you all and inspiring to hear how much you are doing for local people.

“Tonight’s event reminds us both how much volunteers can achieve and the part Rotarians play in aiding them locally.

“The speeches underline the vital nature of the money we collect and pass on.”
