TEAMS dressed up in their silliest outfits and took the plunge at the It’s A Knockout Family Fun Day.

The 17 teams tested their fitness and water sliding skills at the annual event in Westhoughton on Monday.

Prizes were handed out to the top two teams, which were Transformers, from Transform in Market Street, and The Rebels, from Sally’s Rocking Rebels Majorettes dance club.

They were both awarded trophies and £200 and £100 respectively, presented by Miss North West, Lucy Physick, from Westhoughton.

The event also raised between £4,500 and £5,000 for the Westhoughton Active Communities Organisation (WACO), which organised the competition.

The money will be pumped back into community functions.

Kellie McGarry, chairman of WACO, said: “There must have been nearly 4,000 people on the field at one point. Considering it wasn’t the best of weather, it was really buzzing.

“Everything was amazing and everyone was fantastic.

“We were all really happy with the event. We had great support from local businesses and companies has been great. We have not ended up having to pay anything as we had so many sponsors.”

She said she was emotional after The Transformers announced that they were donating their prize money right back to WACO.

As well as the competition, there were a selection of food stalls, a raffle and tombola as well as street entertainers roaming the Central Drive playing field.

And for the first time, there were junior members of the WACO team helping out on the day, which Ms McGarry is hoping to bring back next year.

Ms McGarry said: “It was a great day and there was some great community spirit.

“I think it is all thanks to the volunteers who helped out, the companies who sponsored us and the community for turning out.”
