A MAN who was taken to hospital after falling from a bridge in Westhoughton did not suffer life-threatening injuries.

The update came after police were called to the bridge in Wigan Road, at its junction with Wearish Lane, shortly after 6pm on Friday to reports that a man had fallen from a bridge.

An ambulance also attended the scene and took the man to hospital.

The incident caused disruption to rail services between Wigan and Bolton.

A spokesperson for Network Rail confirmed that the train line running beneath Wigan Road was closed from 6.20pm while emergency services were on site.

The line reopened at around 7.10pm.

Westhoughton South councillor Anna-Marie Watters passed the scene, at the junction with Wigan Road, shortly after the incident.

She said she had seen 'eight to 10 police cars, an ambulance and a Network Rail incident van'.
