A CAR was set on fire in a residential street in a suspected arson attack.

Firefighters and police were called out to the blaze in Wesley Close, Westhoughton, at about 8pm on Sunday.

Crews arrived to find the car, a black Volkswagen Golf, engulfed in flames.

The fire was put out and the firefighters ensured the scene was safe before leaving the scene later that night.

A spokesman from Greater Manchester Police confirmed the incident was being looked at and it is believed it was deliberately started.

Residents living nearby have claimed the car was dumped on the street on Friday and the windows had been smashed.

Complaints have been made about the fact the car has been left in the street since the fire.

One resident, who did not wish to be named, said he had contacted Bolton Council but was told it was the police's responsibility to remove the vehicle.

Attempts have been made to contact the local police team to confirm it is their responsibility.

The neighbour added: "In light of the recent crime meeting I attended, it is clear to me that the police need all the support they can get. Not more cuts."
