A ROAD safety quiz was held for schools in memory of a community hero who was killed when he was hit by a car.

Harold Daniels, former president of Westhoughton Rotary Club, died in June 2016 aged 82 after he was knocked down while crossing Chorley Road in Westhoughton.

Following his death, his family launched a fund in his memory and some of the money has gone towards a road safety quiz organised by the rotary club.

Primary schools across Westhoughton took part and a team from Sacred Heart Primary School came out on top.

Phil Wood, from the Rotary Club, said: "Harold had been a vital and active member of Rotary, always at the heart of all its community work."

Schools were provided with copies of the Highway Code and five of them competed at Brookfield Hall in Peel Street.

There were teams from Sacred Heart, Eatock, St Bartholomew's, St George's and St James'.

The quiz was run by past presidents including Mr Wood, Steve Harrington and John Moutrie.

Sacred Heart beat St James' in the final by just one point.

The winning team was made up of pupils Arthur Snape, Orlaith Willoughby, Meredith Case and Stanley Morris.

Mr Daniels' daughter Susan Misson presented the trophy.

She said that Mr Daniels would have enjoyed such an occasion, bringing local young people together and encouraging them to improve their knowledge.

She said: "His life-long work for the community had helped people of all ages but he always retained a keen interest in those still in education."

Mr Daniels, who lived in Spindle Walk, Westhoughton was well known for his community work and was also chairman of Westhoughton Community Network.

His efforts earned him also earned him an MBE.

Callum Smedley was sentenced to 270 hours of unpaid work in August after pleading guilty to causing death by careless driving.

He avoided jail time after Mr Daniels' family asked the judge not to jail Smedley but to make him give back to the community.
