The choice is still ours
9:41am Wednesday 7th May 2008
I AGREE with Paul Hobson, most people - including me - don't need a 4x4 vehicle, but while we still have a choice in this country I will carry on driving my old 4x4.

We can't afford to get rid of 4X4s
9:39am Wednesday 7th May 2008
IN reply to the letter by Paul Hobson, "Most motorists do not need a 4x4" (May 5), I use a 4x4 - a true 4x4 not a small car or a big car classed as a 4x4, a distinction that many people will understand when they come to pay their road tax.

University name is not spelt correctly
9:37am Wednesday 7th May 2008
ON one of our regular family visits to Bolton we were keen to view the new statue of Fred Dibnah.

9:35am Wednesday 7th May 2008
AS part of this year's budget settlement, the Labour council has allocated an additional £1 million to the highways budget.

The death knell for pub tradition
9:33am Wednesday 7th May 2008
AS an occasional quaffer of fine ales I am greatly exercised by the rapidly diminishing number of good old fashioned pubs.

New Labour has betrayed the NHS
9:31am Wednesday 7th May 2008
HOW will these super surgeries be financed, and why is it necessary to go to all that expense?

Fluoride is a poison to be avoided
10:13am Tuesday 6th May 2008
I aGree with your article ("Green Party: Keep fluoride out of water", April 28), which expresses concern that the toxic fluoride chemical may be added to Bolton water supplies.

Please clarify this missing bus stop problem
10:11am Tuesday 6th May 2008
I read with interest Brian Derbyshire's letter in The Bolton News recently regarding an incident where he and his disabled wife were "left stranded" by a bus driver when only a short distance from the bus stop and clearly indicating to the driver their wishes to board the bus.

Not happy about bus pass incident
10:09am Tuesday 6th May 2008
I too am not happy with First Bus Drivers. My son is 14 and has special needs. He therefore receives free bus travel and has recently received his new Concession Plus Bus Pass.

Not all bus drivers are selfish
10:06am Tuesday 6th May 2008
I am writing in response to two recent letters featured in your paper regarding First Group drivers in Bolton. Having worked on the buses for several years, but not recently, I feel that I have to defend my former colleagues.

Was it a good idea to do Fred statue?
10:04am Tuesday 6th May 2008
The limerick from Saturday, May 3 is very good. I notice that whoever drew the illustration, did not put any fasteners on Fred's jacket - thus avoiding making the same "error" as the sculptor ie. having Fred buttoning up the female way.

Extend clean-up throughout town
10:02am Tuesday 6th May 2008
The cleaning up of the flagstones around the Churchgate area was very welcome. Now, can this be extended throughout the town and on to the walls of Bolton.

Bury Lions Carnival Parade & Gala is on Saturday, June 14.

Thanks to those who voted
9:59am Tuesday 6th May 2008
It is normally good practice to not get drawn by letters from political opponents written during the rush of an election.

Time for Gordon Brown to go
9:58am Tuesday 6th May 2008
After the humiliation of the council results nationally, I am reminded of the song by Jilted John - Gordon is a Moron. As a socialist I believe the time has come for Mr Brown to be replaced. Harriet Harman also has to go.

Extra carriages - not mych improvement

Important we get Contractors Framework right
1:55pm Monday 5th May 2008
According to information I have received from officers of the council, one of the companies that has been recommended to me by officers for the new Contractors Framework is implicated in an investigation by the Office of Fair Trading. This concerns me greatly.

Environment scare is a tax con
1:54pm Monday 5th May 2008
CAN Peter Johnston, "Don't dismiss climate concerns" (April 29), give any proof, or indeed any sort of checkable facts, that Watford Junction will be under water in a few years' time, or is this another case of Labour's dodgy dossiers?

Most motorists do not need a 4X4
1:53pm Monday 5th May 2008
I READ with astonishment the letter "Gas guzzlers not taking over the road" (May 1). The writer, who hides behind a nom de plume, did not really answer my questions.

Don't over-egg the teachers' pudding
1:52pm Monday 5th May 2008
I CANNOT understand the point of Andy Smith's letter on the teachers' strike, "Teachers deserve pay and protection" (April 29). Does he think that giving more pay to teachers would improve, let alone eradicate, the dreadful pupil behaviour that he mentions? I fear not.
