Roads are not best place for horses

SPOT on George Francis, "Horse riders get away with leaving mess on roads" (April 29).

I had not really thought too much about the amount of mess horses leave in their trail, as well as the fact that riders slow down traffic by taking their horses on roads not really meant for these poor animals.

What I have always objected to is the way the riders think they own the road. They look at you as if you have committed an offence if you don't slow down and occasionally respond with an insulting salute or comment.

I generally do slow down for horses, but I am usually not thanked.

If I dare to criticise any of these people riding side by side - just like ignorant cyclists do - then I am normally greeted by a barrage of offences.

Yes, perhaps a century ago roads were suitable for horses, but this is not the case for these easily frightened animals anymore.

I'm amazed at how much horse plop there is around the Reebok as people and children are making their way to the ground. The Police don't make any efforts to clean it up.

I'm sick and tired of having to clean the stuff off my car!!

They dont pay road tax, get em off the roads. Its not safe, for the horse, rider of vehicles around them. Either get em off the roads, or attach a bucket to their a55 and move em to the pavements.

I have three horses, none of them poo on the road, they get taken on bridle ways and fields. If i do have to take my horses on the road, then they have a bag attach to the sadle which collects poo. They should be made mandatory.

a sad indicment on the intelligence of the good people of bolton, when the only two matters that get their feathers ruffled in this fine paper are horse poo and speed bumps, must be a wierd connection somewhere

When was a road tax introduced??????

I knew I paid a Vehicle excise duty which goes to Central governmenr but I thought roads were done through council taxes and as such no such thing as roads tax!!!! In other words anyone can use the roads no matter what whether it be cars, horses, bikes, pogo sticks and even space hoppers - never mind human beings!!!!
