We can't afford to get rid of 4X4s

IN reply to the letter by Paul Hobson, "Most motorists do not need a 4x4" (May 5), I use a 4x4 - a true 4x4 not a small car or a big car classed as a 4x4, a distinction that many people will understand when they come to pay their road tax.

I own a caravan that I use for my holidays in this country, which is the reason I have a 4x4. Due to the weather in this country - ie wet - I have needed a 4x4 to site my van on a number of holidays. I also admit that I like driving it.

To return to Mr Hobson's arguments against 4x4s, I wonder what would happen if motorists followed his suggestion and bought smaller cars or hybrid models? Where would this Government get its taxes from then?

We have been told to stop smoking, stop drinking and buy cars that use less fuel. The revenue lost from these three alone would cripple this country. Would Mr Hobson not then complain about the cost of living?

I agree heartily with the writer. I don't see why we should all be stuck with Hobson's choice, just because Hobson can't see beyond his own petty jealousy and blinkered & ignorant lifestyle.

Vehicle emissions make absolutely no difference to the envoironment.ALL new cars (yes 4x4s as well)have to meet extremely strong emissions regulations& older cars as well!(m.o.t. emissions testing)
Its just a ploy by the government to increase taxes,& the majority of the blinkered public stand by & let them!
