I LIVED in Farnworth till I was 20 years old and have lovely memories from my childhood before I was married and moved to Bolton.
I remember the fantastic market and collecting Green Shield Stamps at the Co-op on Brackley Street.
Saturday afternoons were spent at the cinema on Peel Street followed by a game of tennis on Darley Court. Then we had Sunday morning mass at St Gregory's Church.

On waking up to a lovely sunny day last Saturday, I thought I would revisit my home town to do my shopping. What a big mistake I made.
It was like driving into a dark cloud. Three-quarters of the market stalls were empty, half the shops around the market were shuttered up, Market Street is full of take-aways so all you see is shutters.
To top it all, the toilets were locked up with a note on the door saying "please be patient" due to refurbishment.
How can one be patient when dying for the loo and knowing that the next nearest toilet is at Asda.
Anybody who visits Farnworth needs Tenna knickers on while finding a loo!
What depressed me even more was that I could not call in a pub on Market Street because half of them were shut.
So, I went to Bury. It has a fabulous market, fantastic parking and plenty of toilets. Ten out of ten for Bury.
Sadly, just driving through Farnworth depresses me. I am surprised it is still on the map.

I am writing in reply to the letter from Brenda McCann you printed on Thursday. It’s great that like so many people she has fond memories of growing up in our town but I was saddened by her comments about it today. We are seeing an upsurge in interest in investing and living here with new houses and apartments in many places, a fine new 6th form college next to Farnworth Park and the new combined school, library and children’s and youth centre at The Orchards, Highfield both due to open in the Autumn and a new health centre is planned in the next few years. The town centre may not look its best just now but that too will attract more investment soon. I would urge everyone who hasn’t done so yet to take a fresh look at Farnworth, it’s well worth it, and with the good will of residents past, present and future we will stay firmly on the map!
