Never mind the cars, what about potholes?

Paul Hobson wants to know why anyone should own a 4x4 vehicle, ("Most motorists do not need a 4x4", Monday, May 5).

Paul feels there is no room on our roads, or in the car parks, for these gas-guzzlers.

I do not drive these days. Being retired means we have time to spare, and we seldom need to rush about, so public transport works for us - most of the time - and especially so with the free passes.

However, looking at the state of so many roads, in and around Bolton, makes me wonder how people manage who do not drive a 4x4.

So many roads are in need of urgent repair. Parents regularly lose children down potholes in some roads in Breightmet!

And what about the numerous speed-humps? I know these are a necessity on many roads, but they do knock seven bells out of ordinary cars - and their occupants.

Suits me fine. I'll go dig some bigger ones for the adults there too.

I drive a seven-seater MPV and a Range Rover. Why? Because I llike them and because I have worked very hard for many years to be able to afford them, so I entirely agree with Mr Russel of Egerton. It has nothing to do with snobbery, arrrogance or being rich, simply the freedom of choice. And as Mr Derbyshire quite rightly says, the roads of Bolton will destroy an 'ordinary' car, as these cheaper imports do not have the quality of suspension or interior finish as do the more expensive models. So, when I am still driving safely around in my 4x4, Mr Hobson will be polluting the earth with yet another scrapper.
