REGARDING Alan Calvert's article about public art, "On the subject of art. . ." (April 7), the only debate over sculptures, street art etc, is why should they be paid for by the taxpayer?
I do not want my tax spent - wasted - on this, to do that is your choice.
So, if you want to be fair, put them all out to public subscription.

Yes, to those who want it pay for it. You cannot be fairer than that.
You will not do that, neither will the politicians, because the majority of the public are not interested in public art, and certainly will not pay for it. The type of art is irrelevant. However, the debate about who pays for it is relevant.
Fred Dibnah's statue was worthwhile and I believe it was paid for out of public subscription, although there is a suspicion that you write these articles tongue in cheek.
