GREEN-fingered youngsters at Castle Hill Primary in Bolton have started work on a new school garden.
Staff at the school in Tonge Moor decided to spruce up their barren school yard by creating a traditional garden with flower beds and vegetable patches.
Children drew their ideal gardens and joined forces with environmental regeneration charity Groundwork, which turned their ideas into a plan.
A group of 22 pupils and their parents and grandparents have now started to turn the design into a reality, and have started work on the first beds.
Headteacher Sarah Curley said: “This project gives the children the opportunity to learn about where fruit and vegetables come from, and nurture them as they grow from seeds into something they can eat.
“They absolutely loved doing the gardening. I am really pleased we’ve been able to give them the opportunity to do it.
“Plus the community is really pulling together on this, which is great.”
