Spearing aiming to get a kick out of set pieces

JAY Spearing has been engaging in a spot of target practice at Euxton this week in an effort to hone his free-kick skills.

The tenacious midfielder has recently been entrusted with all Wanderers’ set pieces and has doubled his efforts on the training ground to sharpen his technique.

With the added threat of Craig Dawson – who has emerged as the main target for free-kicks since his arrival from West Brom on loan – Spearing believes the extra work can result in more goals.

“It is the first time I have been responsible for taking free-kicks, the manager has shown confidence in me and I am happy to take on the role,” he said.

“I have been practising in training so I will be ready, we are always going to be dangerous from set pieces due to the height we have got in our squad and hopefully the hard work will start paying off.”

Spearing admits the task of tackling Hull – who have won four of their last five games – is a tough one, but the on-loan Liverpool man is confident of putting on a show on home turf.

He said: “Hull City are flying at the moment, they are playing very well but they are coming to the Reebok and we will play to our best like always.”
