McCarthy swears by his double winners
MICK McCarthy admits he got a dressing down from his wife after turning the air blue with his celebrations after victory over Wanderers.
The Ipswich boss was elated after Carlos Edwards’ strike earned them a first victory in five games to keep the Tractor Boys ahead of the relegation pack.
But the Yorkshireman was soon brought back down to earth by the missus – who didn’t take kindly to his choice of language.
“I come in here all nice and calm,” he said in his post-match press conference.
“But I’ve just walked into my office to see my friends and family and shouted ‘YOU ******* BEAUTY!’
“My wife told me not to swear in front of my granddaughter, but she’s only seven weeks old so she doesn’t know what’s going on! Of course I’m elated.”
McCarthy reckons the victory – which completes the double over Wanderers this term – was made all the sweeter by the fact Dougie Freedman’s side had been in such fine form.
“It’s a huge result,” he said. “They don’t come in much better form than Bolton. What was it, six wins and two draws prior to them coming here?
“We’ve done okay against the form teams, it’s when we’ve come up against the Barnsleys and Peterboroughs that we’ve struggled.
“I don’t know why that is. If I did, I’d pack this in, write a book and make millions.
“I thought we had a really good first half, there was a spell in the second half when they got on top, but we changed the shape to stem the tide a bit and overall we deserved to win it.
“It’s about time a midfielder scored. I’ve been banging their heads all week about contributing more.
“I decided to leave him (Edwards) out last week as I wanted a more narrow midfield. Whether a rest has benefited him or not, I don’t know.”
