LOSTOCK’S hard-hitting Ross Smith pulled off the shock of the Bolton Tennis Tournament yesterday when he knocked out top seed Matthew Boyle in three sets.

The men’s singles had already produced a number of upsets with seeds tumbling in the first two days, but Smith’s victory was undoubtedly the highlight of the weekend.

Sky-high temperataures had made it tough for competitors on Friday and Saturday but cooler conditions at the Bolton School courts yesterday proved ideal for spectators and players alike – and in the day’s big match it was Smith who prospered.

There was no hint of what was to come when Boyle took the first set 6-4.

But Smith found his range with both ground shots and lobs and took the second set 6-1 to level the match.

Boyle recovered a little in the final set but Smith would not be denied and took the set 6-4.

Number 13 seed Martin Sephton was one of the first of the fancied players to crash out when he was beaten 6-0, 6-0 by Josh Sabery on Friday night.

Twenty-four hours later 15th seed Chris Blackshaw and eighth seed Stuart Cartwright fell by the wayside, Blackshaw going down 6-4, 6-0 to Richard Lane and Cartwright losing 7-6, 6-2 to the ever dangerous Rob Allan.

The hot weather appears to have affected players’ staying-power with the first set proving decisive in most cases with fewer matches than usual stretching to three sets.

There have been exceptions, most notably in the handicap mixed doubles.

Father and daughter Nick and Olivia Hadjinicolaou had a slow start but overcame Jordan Halsall and Susan Shephard 5-6, 6-3, 6-1 and in a closer encounter in the same event Bradshaw’s James Edgington and Danielle Davies beat Lostock’s David Platt and Robyn Lambert 5-6, 6-2, 6-5 – the last game of the final set requiring a couple of deuce points on Danielle’s serve before they closed the match out.
