Cian Bolger leaves it late to make point for Bolton Wanderers U21s
A LATE Cian Bolger goal secured a first point of the new Under-21s Premier League season for Wanderers at Lancashire FA headquarters on Monday.
Jamie Fullarton’s Whites went into the game having narrowly lost their season opener 1-0 at Sunderland.
And the team which included senior defenders Tyrone Mears and Tim Ream began brightly.
The hosts edged ahead when youth team graduate, and Northern Ireland U21 player, Chris Lester, poked home from close range after a touch from Tom Eaves helped Andy Kellett’s cross goalwards.
West Brom snatched an equaliser against the run of play on 40 minutes after Jay Lynch failed to clear his lines, giving Saido Berahino a simple finish.
Just before the interval, however, Wanderers could have regained the lead when Tom Youngs was brought down in the box by Baggies keeper Jack Rose and a penalty was awarded and Eaves hit the bar with his effort.
After the break, Wanderers pressed for a second and summer signing Conor Wilkinson came on.
West Brom took the lead when Berahino doubled his tally with a powerful header with 14 minutes left before Bolger found the net after a goalmouth scramble on 87 minutes.
l Ben Dennis, aged 19, has joined Hyde after leaving the Reebok this summer, joining former Whites team-mate Adam Blakeman.
