The future's bright for Jermaine Beckford, says Bolton Wanderers captain Zat Knight
ZAT Knight has given Jermaine Beckford his full backing – insisting it will not be long before he hits the goal trail.
The Wanderers skipper has watched summer arrival Beckford endure a frustrating start to his Reebok career, failing to score in his first four appearances.
And like his team, Beckford heads to Tranmere Rovers tonight hoping the Capital One Cup can change his fortunes for the better.
But Knight reckons the Jamaica international’s current barren form in front of goal will only prove a temporary blip.
“I said to Jermaine to keep his head up,” he said.
“As a striker, sometimes you can go six, seven or eight games without a goal. Then, from nowhere, you are scoring every week and don’t even know how you are scoring sometimes.
“As long as he keeps getting in the positions, it will come.
“He has done it at a high level – not long ago he was at Everton.
“He has done really well in the Championship before and hopefully he will get off the mark soon.”
Although Knight has thrown his weight behind Beckford, the big defender admits Wanderers have suffered a little for not showing a killer instinct in front of goal in their first four league games.
Two draws and two defeats from a tough run of opening fixtures have prompted a lukewarm reaction among fans – but the experienced skipper is confident that the team can start to gather momentum.
“We played well on Saturday and have done this season apart from at Nottingham Forest – we didn’t even turn up there and that was disappointing,” he said. “I think we need to kill games off when we are on top.
“We had some good chances in the first half against QPR with Medo hitting the post and Jermaine had a one-on-one.
“We restricted them to shots from outside the box apart from one lapse in concentration – I think that was the only time they got in behind us.
“We have to take confidence from Saturday’s game because we played well on the whole.
“If we put in performances like that we will win games soon.
“We didn’t get our just rewards.”
