Mills and Ream can still carve out future at Wanderers

DOUGIE Freedman insists the door is still open for Matt Mills and Tyrone Mears to become first-team regulars at Wanderers.
The pair looked to he heading towards the Reebok exit door over the summer with heavy interest from Leeds United and Millwall respectively. But both players performed well in the Capital One Cup defeat at Tranmere Rovers on Tuesday night and, says Freedman, have shown the right attitude to force their way back into his thinking.
“Matt hasn’t been selected, but, to be fair, he has trained very, very well,” he said. “I am not one for bunging players out and making them train with the reserves. “I like to keep the players together. “He has had to wait for his opportunity but I think he did very well the other night at Tranmere so he has got to be in contention to start the game, no doubt about it.
“Tyrone (Mears) is in the same boat. There are certain players who might not have looked like they had a future and possibly could have gone in the summer but the way we treat them at the club they understand they can get a chance.
“There has never been one player that I have just said ‘you are not going to play’.
“If they are training right and showing the right attitude towards the group then they will get a chance.”
