Ace is keen to make his Mark
A BOLTON teenager has served up a few surprises by winning both the under-14s and under-16s boys’ singles titles at the Lancashire Championships.
Mark Rushton-Woods has high hopes for the future in the sport after the Bolton Arena player defeated number two seed George Hutchings in the under-14s category 6-2, 6-3.
He followed it up in the final of the Under-16s where he met Hutchings again.
This time the number three seed was in the bottom half of the draw while Hutchings was the number two seed.
He raced to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Hutchings.
Proud mum Dawn Woods said: “He was expecting to go and have a good chance of winning the under-14 event “However, to win the under-16 was a step up because it is not his age group and he was against some tennis players who were two years older.
“He had been playing really well going into the competition because he went out to Spain for two weeks.
“He won the doubles competition and singles and won against the number three in Portugal and was really happy.”
Elsewhere, the local celebrations were continued in the mens singles where Simon Roberts retained his title and won it for the ninth time.
The number one seed recorded a convincing 6-2, 6-1 win over number two seed Chris Parkes.
As if that was not enough, he also saw his name put on the trophy for winning the mixed doubles title.
There was disappointment on the final day as Westhoughton’s Sabrina Federici lost out to Lauren Dowling 6-4, 6-4.
The competition attracted tennis players from Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Lancashire.
