Bolton Wanderers' finances scotch deadline day deals for Peter Ramage and Michael Kightly
DOUGIE Freedman’s late double loan swoop ended in disappointment last night as the signings of defender Peter Ramage and winger Michael Kightly both slipped through his grasp.
After a frustrating day with little sign of the sweeping changes that were pledged after the derby defeat at Blackburn, things suddenly sprung into life two hours before the close of the window.
Crystal Palace defender Ramage appeared to be heading for Barnsley until Wanderers made a late bid – only to fail to come up with the requisite finance in time for the deal to go through.
It was a similar story for Stoke City winger Kightly who was on the verge of signing for Burnley until Freedman turned his head with a late bid.
A deal could not be thrashed out in time, however, and the former Wolves man signed at Turf Moor.
To compound Wanderers fans’ misery, there was no sign of the expected exodus of players – which it was hoped would pave the way for further signings.
The likes of David Ngog, Tim Ream, Matt Mills, Tyrone Mears and even skipper Zat Knight were up for grabs.
Swansea City were plotting a move for Ngog on Sunday night before they finally managed to land number one target Alvaro Vazquez on loan from Spanish club Getafe.
Middlesbrough were linked once again with old boy David Wheater – although no bid materialised.
And likewise, QPR had been keeping tabs on Knight’s situation after he came under heavy criticism in the light of the weekend’s result at Ewood Park, but did not step forward.
It now remains to be seen whether the big defender will keep the captain’s armband or his place in the side when Wanderers reconvene a week on Saturday against Leeds United.
Meanwhile, one of the new faces who did come through the door in the summer window, Andre Moritz, will be the guest at the BWSA meeting at the Reebok tonight.
Sports rehabilitator Dave Dean will also be on hand with tales from the medical side of the club – with the night starting at 7.30pm in the Wanderers Suite.
