Encouraging signs for Bolton Wanderers Under-18s despite defeat
WANDERERS Under-18s slipped to a third successive league defeat to Aston Villa at Lostock on Saturday.
David Lee and Tony Kelly’s youngsters started well against the Villains and took the lead through an own goal.
They continued to create chances and had an effort harshly ruled out for offside.
It remained 1-0 to the young Whites at the interval but Villa were level not long after the restart when Jack Grealish netted from the penalty spot.
Villa took charge and 17-year-old winger Grealish scored twice more to complete his hat-trick and put the visitors 3-1 up.
Wanderers responded well and pulled a goal back through Isaac Nelson after some excellent build-up play from Tom Walker on the left.
But they could not find a leveller and ended up on the losing side for the third time in this season’s FA Under-18 Premier League.
Despite the defeat, Lee was again keen to take the positives out of the match.
He said: “The boys kept playing the correct way and again created several chances.
“They were only denied an equaliser after some good saves by their keeper.
“The players are progressing and Saturday was another learning curve for them, in terms of our team structure and our opponents’ different formations throughout the game.”
