TENNIS: Bolton's conveyor belt of talent running smoothly
THE organisers of one of the biggest tennis events in the area have hailed it a success.
The Lancashire Championships were held at the Bolton Arena last week and local players had lots to celebrate with a hoard of titles being wrapped up.
Last week, Your Sport reported that Mark Rushton-Woods sealed the under-14s boys’ singles title and then followed it up with the u16s competition as well.
The major success story was Bolton Arena star Lauren Dowling who brought home the women’s singles title by beating Westhoughton’s Sabrina Federici.
Apart from the seniors title she also won the u14s, u16s and u18s tournaments.
Stuart Kay, team manager from the Bolton Arena, said: “I feel Lauren Dowling’s success in winning the u16s, u18s and ladies’ open event was the biggest achievement of all the Bolton Arena players.
“Lauren’s tennis has progressed a lot in 2013 and is now competing in British Tour events around the country at the age of 15.
“We are very proud of what she is managing to do and hopefully she can go on to bigger things.”
Plans are in place for the top Lancashire competition to return next year.
Tennis bosses are delighted with the number of players from the Arena who progressed into the latter stages of the competition.
Kay said: “This year I saw an increase in the number of Bolton Arena players achieving runners-up or winner’s spots a 20 per cent increase in players achieving these stages from last year.
“Since the Arena became an international high performance centre last year within the LTA’s landscape the aim is to keep producing players of all ages to reach their potential.”
One of the highlights was Bolton’s Simon Roberts who won the men’s singles title for the ninth time – beating the record held by Mark Schofield.
He will be looking to return and try to retain the top tournament title for the 10th time.
Kay said: “Simon Roberts is like a machine on court. He never misses and never stops running the ball down.”
