Bolton's Touch Tennis champions wins again
BOLTON’S world champion touch tennis player held onto his crown last weekend after beating off some tough competition locally.
Simon Roberts was in action at a touch tennis tournament at the Bolton Arena and he brought home the crown beating Matt Golledge in a one-sided final.
Earlier in the competition, he came back from a set down to beat Elliott Mould in the semi-finals.
Speaking about the event, tournament organiser Stuart Kay, said: “It was a great event with a good crowd of about 100 people watching it.
“One of the good things was that Simon was able to win the event after an impressive performance.
“We were lucky to have Halsall Racing Team sponsoring the event.
“Martin Halsall put up some prize money of £1,500 which was the biggest outside the main grand slam events.
“We are hoping they will return next year because they told us it was one of the best-run competitions outside the main events.”
Earlier in the event, Roberts took care of local hopeful Jonny Shacklady with the loss of just two games in the quarter-finals. The other half of the draw featured Bolton’s Junior Wimbledon champion George Morgan, Adam Hassan, Elliott Seabrook and Matt Golledge. Oldfield also looked to create an upset before losing a third set tie break to Golledge 8-6 in a marathon match.
Hassan looked to make his first major final since Eastbourne 2012 but came up short. Roberts and Shacklady won the main doubles event. While local player Tom Dillon won the junior event.
