LOAN striker Joe Mason hopes he can be the man to improve Wanderers’ conversion rate in front of goal against Doncaster today.

The 22-year-old is in line for a first Wanderers start at the Reebok after two cameo appearances from the bench since his arrival from South Wales.

And he is ready to play his part if called upon by Whites boss Dougie Freedman.

Speaking exclusively to The Bolton News, Mason said: “The aim when I came up here was to play more games than I was doing at Cardiff.

“I’ve had a little taste in the last two games but obviously I would like a bit more and hopefully that will happen this weekend as we look to bounce back from Tuesday.

“Everyone was naturally disappointed with the result on Tuesday but we have to put it behind us and try and put things right against Doncaster.”

Mason is waiting patiently for his full Whites debut after agreeing a switch from Cardiff until January 5 – at the second attempt after the initial deal fell through.

There are only six more chances for him to do that but whatever part he plays, Mason is happy with the choice he made to move to the Reebok.

The Republic of Ireland Under-21 forward says the opportunity to work with Freedman and strikers of the quality of Jermaine Beckford was a big factor in choosing the Whites ahead of other interested suitors.

Mason added: “I had a say in where to go. I had a few clubs to choose from but I picked Bolton because of the size of the club and they were on a really good run as well.

“The manager being a striker himself and determined to sign me was also a factor.

“Another reason is the calibre of striker that is already at the club like Jermaine. I can learn from them.

“They are all very good to me and helping me in training and I can only get better.

“It is a good bunch of lads here. I know a lot of players say that wherever they go but it is true here at Bolton.

“I was only really playing the cup games and a few reserve matches here and there at Cardiff. I wanted to come out on loan and thought it was done at Bolton before it got cancelled the day after and I was gutted with that.

“Thankfully, it did eventually go through.

“Off the field, I have settled quickly. Kevin (McNaughton, fellow Cardiff loanee) and all the lads have helped me settle in the area.

“It’s nice here and everyone is really friendly and I am enjoying myself.

“Now it is about doing my bit on the pitch.”
