WHITES defender Tim Ream says Wanderers go into Sunday’s Championship derby at Wigan in fine fettle after a winning display against Doncaster he labelled “a complete performance”.

Saturday’s 3-0 home win was the perfect tonic for Ream and his team-mates after back-to-back 1-0 defeats to Middlesbrough and Huddersfield.

The US international admits there was some collective soul-searching after the second of those against the Terriers a week ago.

But the response was the confidence boost they needed and the perfect retort to doubters from outside the camp.

Ream said: “There was criticism and it doesn’t matter where it comes from. You can’t control it. “You can only affect what you do on the field.

“What former players say or what fans shout at you from the terraces we can’t really do a lot about, we can only do what we do, and win games. We were obviously disappointed going into the weekend – upset at ourselves more than anything.

“You can look at things in the previous two games and want to change them and obviously the displays could be better.

“We didn’t come out with the right amount of energy against Huddersfield and didn’t finish our chances.

“But it was the effort we discussed the following day and that’s what we wanted to bring into the Doncaster game. It was a collective discussion – not just the senior guys. Top to bottom from the young boys to Zat (Knight, club captain). That is what you need in the tough times – letting everyone know that you are together and that we needed to put in a bit more effort.

“I think out there against Doncaster it was pretty much the complete performance.

“It’s definitely a good result to take into the (Wigan) game.”

Wanderers make the short eight-mile trip to the DW Stadium to face a Wigan side under the new management of Uwe Rosler following the departure of former Whites boss Owen Coyle – the man who signed Ream from New York Red Bulls almost two years ago.

The 26-year-old admits the added spice of facing a former boss has gone, but says it will not change their focus on getting another three Championship points.

Ream added: “You know there would have been a little more in it for the supporters, but that isn’t something we could really pay attention to.

“We have to focus on what we do on the field and not what goes on behind the scenes or what is said in the papers or on the terraces.

“It doesn’t matter to us. It’ll be the same thing as it was at Middlesbrough.

“They might bring a little more energy, but at the end of the day it’s not something we should worry about.”
