WANDERERS (4-1-4-1) ANDY LONERGAN...6 Had little hope with any of the goal that beat him but will nevertheless be fuming at the marking for the third goal.

KEVIN MCNAUGHTON...7 Very little beat him and he threw himself into challenges all over the pitch in the first half. Can’t complain about his display.

MATT MILLS...6 Frustrated about the penalty and maybe rightly so – but will share blame for not clearing the set piece that ultimately settled the game.

TIM REAM...6 Like Mills, not at his shining best by any stretch. Not the kind of game that particularly suits the American’s style.

ALEX BAPTISTE...5 Beaten time and time again by McManaman in the first 45 minutes but at least steadied the ship in the latter stages.

JAY SPEARING...6 Didn’t lack for work-rate or effort but when the game needed a calm head at 2-2, maybe the skipper needed to slow things down.

NEIL DANNS...7 Got up and down the pitch well and chipped in with what seemed a vital goal at the time. Frustratingly, it was all in vain.

DARREN PRATLEY...6 Put himself about but got rather bypassed in a frantic second half and never really seemed in control of the game.

ANDRE MORITZ...6 Scored from the spot and showed some flashes of brilliance but like Wanderers, they took a good half hour to appear.

CHUNG YONG-LEE...6 Another who grew into the game but a shade too late. Was a threat in the second half down the left side as Wanderers fought back.

JOE MASON...6 Led the line well and was inches away from getting a decisive touch to Moritz’s cross that would have meant another equaliser.

Subs: Beckford 79 (for Pratley) 5 - Didn't get into the game and missed one decent chance.

M Davies 83 (for Danns) 5 - Great to see him back but had little influence.

Hall 89 (for Chung-Yong) 5 - Too late to save the game for Wanderers.

Not used: Lee-Barrett, Knight, Medo, Eagles.

STAR MAN – Kevin McNaughton Had his resolve been spread across the team in the first 45 minutes, or indeed the last 25, then Wanderers would not have had to dig themselves out of trouble. Hard to think of an occasion on which the rock-solid Scot was bettered.

WIGAN ATHLETIC (4-4-2) SCOTT CARSON...7 EMMERSON BOYCE...6 IVAN RAMIS...6 LEON BARNETT...6 JEAN BEAUSEJOUR...6 JAMES MCARTHUR...6 CHRIS MCCANN...6 BEN WATSON...7 CALLUM MCMANAMAN...8 NICK POWELL...8 GRANT HOLT...6 Subs: Crainey 6, 52 (for Beausejour) McLean 6, 52 (for Holt), Perch 5, 72 (for Watson) Not used: Nicholls, Gomez, Keane, Fotune.

Their star man: Nick Powell McManaman offered width and pace but the guile was all coming from the Manchester United loanee, whose touches were class from start to finish. And what a goal...
