TRANSFER LIVE: Countdown to transfer deadline day: Catch up with the latest Bolton Wanderers breaking news here

This live event has finished

11:32pm

DF on the 2-1 defeat at QPR: "Something has got to change because we can't keep playing the way we are doing for it not to change.

"The minute you take your eye off the ball you can let your standards slip. But we created four or five good opportunities and somewhere along the line we will take them and win convincingly."

11:30pm

DF on Austin challenge on Ream: "I was disappointed with the referees' performance. It started in the first minute of the game as we had a guy go off with two stitches and a broken nose. Yet nothing was done with it."

11:28pm

DF on sticking with one up front: "I felt the game plan of breaking on them was working. I didn't want to change that plan because I felt that was how we could hurt QPR."

11:26pm

11:25pm

No-one has ever made a serious offer for him. Would find it odd if they did at this point.

11:25pm

He played against United tonight didn't he? Big blow if that's the case.

11:24pm

11:23pm

11:22pm

Time for the senior lads to bail themselves out.

11:22pm

You could ruin some of those young players' careers by chucking them into this. Not fair and they're not ready. IMO.

11:21pm

Davies did look flat out when he came off - but it doesn't look particularly adventurous staying with one up front.

11:20pm

Agreed. Thought Eagles/Moritz should have come on instead of Chungy (more of a goal threat).

11:20pm

Not clearing the decks more effectively in the summer.
Needed more Championship experience.

11:18pm

And Jermaine Beckford is back running, we hear.

11:18pm

Not sure. Might depend on how badly broken Ream's nose is.
I think Freedman knows he needs a goalscorer badly.

11:17pm

No I don't. Simply because whomever comes in is still going to have the same problems DF has got at the moment. Need to limp on, get a couple of signings in and rebuild.

11:15pm

Think it is harsh to say there is nothing positive to take from the game.

Thought it was the best 90 mins Mark Davies has played since he came back, and thought Pratley played very well too.

But take your points about tactics and goalscorers.

Beyond News Forum says

DF just said what about counter attack? It worked well? It was average at best against a less than average QPR. Then again, BWFC are far from average at the moment.

Let's stop the easy chit chat Marc in regards DF... there are no positives and nothing to take from the game except a lesson on taking chances and not tasting defeat again.

God knows I want DF to do well, but it isn't looking likely playing in a style not suited to a single one of those players on the pitch. I'd love to be a fly on the wall when DF announces the tactics because I bet everyone in that changing room sink down... hardly confidence in your strikers and defence playing what is seemingly 9 defenders and one up front.

Seriously am I being harsh?

Jeez I wish I wasn't. It isn't financial those boys ARE good enough - I believe a tunnel bust up is coming at this rate.

Hayden white shows us why he was so highly rated and felt he did well under the circumstances. Who will be the next recruit through the Reebok doors? Will there be more additions? Felt DF made the right choice changing Davies for jutkiewics. Davies just returning from injury don't want him to get another injury.

11:09pm

Well, we've been kicked out at Loftus Road. This blog is now being brought to you from the back of a speeding car.

10:55pm

Not really. That result would be a kick in a proverbials for anyone, but the luck aspect of tonight's result would get anyone down.

10:53pm

Freedman very critical of early challenge by Charlie Austin on Tim Ream.

10:52pm

But when you look at Ream - who has a broken nose and a couple of stitches - and the Craig Davies shot that bounced off the bar, you do have to wonder when BWFC's luck will change.

10:51pm

Wanderers played well enough tonight - but I think QPR's back four looked like they could be "got at". That's where the second half changes were a bit puzzling.

10:47pm

10:46pm

10:45pm

I was certainly calling for one. I'll publish the exact response to that question later on.

10:44pm

DF said after the game that he wanted to keep the shape of the team because he felt the counter-attack was working.

10:43pm

Hayden started quite nervously but grew into the game. They overloaded him in the second half a bit - but he put his challenges in. He stood up well.

Jutkiewicz did okay when he came on, put himself about and got one header deflected just wide.

10:41pm

Not at this rate. Never have subscribed to the old adage "too good to go down."
But I think the performance as a whole was enough to get something out of most sides.

6:16pm

The Matchday Live module can be found here but I'll keep this one open for the message facility, and to have a debrief after the game. Hope to see you over there!

6:12pm

OK - I'm going to be launching a separate blog for Matchday Live in the next couple of minutes but I'll leave this one open so that I can put on any transfer news after the game.

i agree with the comments, i don't think there is any kind of physical element in our team, we used to bully teams like Arsenal, Wenger hated coming to the Reebok, back to basics are needed and a change of formation, big Sam loved the 4,3,3 and it can quickly change to 4,5,1 when defending(which we cannot do, we couldn't tackle a full English breakfast at the moment).
We desperately need McNaughton, Dawson, any kind of real left back!!! and Pratley to fire on all cylinders again, great box to box work rate on his day, if only Nobby was back!!!

Beyond News Forum says

I am finding a few things difficult to accept - these are not the managers fault, it is the team as a whole... back to basics training issues could be a factor. We can clearly see these things from the stands.

1. We have no width and when we do the ball is either terrible or non-existent.

2. Way too much room in the middle when the opposition is running down the wings at our defence. All too often the ball seems to appear at the oppositions feet just outside the box .

3. The long ball lone striker route - the ball is played and nobody is there to receive it.

4. The ball is taken down the wing by one of our pacier wingers - there is nobody in the box to cross to.

5. Rushed or not practiced set pieces - nothing is happening from free kicks bar that one from Moritz the other week.

6. Physicality is no there - there is nothing physical about this Bolton team, Lofty is harder!

7. Cheeky passages of play - remember Nobby Nolan/Big Sam tactics always had the tendency to rub the opposition up the wrong way with cheeky lawful tactics.

8. I do not think Chungy should play at the moment - he is obviously suffering from some kind of psychological trauma from his prior injury - more development toughening up is needed - and for God sake give him some food!

9. You can actually see the nerves rattling through the bodies of some of the BWFC players from the stands - it is absolutely plain to see - I don;t know what DF is seeing. If the opposition sees this then the team can be ratled at any given opportunity - who is the teams Sport Psychologist? Sack him/her to they are not effective at all.

I see three regular players performing, and some subs (who I cannot understand bench warming given their hunger to play) - Danns, Ream, Lonergan, Moritz, Hall, Pratley (on occasion), Odelusi (when played) Eagles (just getting back after injury) - the rest have gone back to their parent clubs). The rest need a good kick up the backside - if SA was in charge or Alex Ferguson had the helm do you think the rest would get in the squad? Not a prayer.

Young Zak Clough should definitely be in the squad, that kid is dynamite even at his age - we all remember Rooney bursting on the scene.

I could go on and on, this is just a smidge of what just I have noted.

What say you Marc?

5:44pm

Actually, this press room is quite fancy. It had just been built the last time I was here and was still having a few teething problems... For example no-one had a key to let us in.

I'm sure we had the best out of Eagles at the start of last season when only he and Prats we're performing, not at the races this season at all, would be nice to see Feeney back but got a feeling it will be a case of wait till summer for a freebie!
Now is the time to let Hall establish himself on the wing and make it his position, Chungy out of sorts like Eagles.
May be time to drop spearing , he needs to have a good look at himself and sort his form out!

"It's getting increasingly regular that clubs agree deals with players but put them out initially as loans. Not sure why."

Fairly certain that's for tax reasons/cash flow. Offsets any costs/expenses such as signing on fees into next season's budget and, therefore, the next tax year whilst not taking a huge chunk out of the existing pot, apart from wages.

That's just a thought out guess, though.

2:04pm

Starting line-up that day... Jaaskelainen, Steinsson, Robinson, Cahill, Knight, Muamba, Eagles, Petrov, Reo-Coker, K Davies, Klasnic.

2:00pm

1:57pm

Owen Coyle was in charge, Neil Warnock looked right on the verge of getting the boot - especially after a 4-0 hammering, and things were looking a lot rosier with Wanderers.

1:56pm

Just reminiscing with the rest of the local press pack en route down to Loftus Road about the last time we came down to QPR.

1:48pm

It's getting increasingly regular that clubs agree deals with players but put them out initially as loans. Not sure why.
Swansea have paid a fee up front that covers Ngog's wages until the end of his Wanderers contract, so regardless of whether he has been sold or loaned doesn't really matter.

1:38pm

Still waiting to hear the exact details of the move - but gather it's an 18-month contract.

1:37pm

Yannick Bastos, the Luxembourg international we've heard plenty about in the last few weeks, will be at Wanderers tomorrow for a medical, I hear.

1:36pm

Right, a nugget of transfer news coming up...

1:34pm

Definitely no interest in Lloyd Dyer this transfer window, I'm told. If he was on a free in the summer, I'd be surprised if Wanderers were not interested.

1:31pm

Answers from the quiz... 1. Gary Megson; 2. Roy McFarland; 3. Bill Ridding; 4. Walter Rowley; 5. Phil Neal; 6. Tampa Bay Rowdies; 7. Wigan and Burnley; 8. 14; 9. Jimmy Armfield; 10. John McGovern.

1:28pm

OK - back again, and en route to QPR.

12:13pm

Right - heading off for lunch now, but thought I'd leave a lunchtime quiz for you.

Today's offering is all about Wanderers managers. I'll publish the answers later on.

1. Which Wanderers manager was on the bench for Norwich City in their famous 2-1 Uefa Cup win over Bayern Munich in 1993?

2. Which former Wanderers manager missed out on a place at the 1974 World Cup after Sir Alf Ramsey’s side failed to beat Poland at Wembley?

3. Which former Wanderers manager holds the distinction of playing for both Manchester United and Manchester City in his playing career?

4. Who took charge of Wanderers at the end of World War Two?

5. Which former Wanderers manager has a trophy cabinet that includes eight First Division title winner’s medals, four League Cup, five Charity Shield, four European Cups, one Uefa Cup and one Uefa Super Cup?

6. Sam Allardyce briefly played in America for what club?

7. Owen Coyle previously managed which two of Wanderers’ Championship rivals?

8. Sammy Lee presided over how many Wanderers games (not including caretaker spell)?

9. Ian Greaves stepped up to the top job after serving as assistant to which Wanderers boss?

10. Which former Wanderers boss played just four times for Leeds United after following Brian Clough from Derby for his ill-fated 44-day spell at Elland Road?

12:06pm

"Not yet" is the word from the Wanderers camp.

11:59am

Gut feeling is "no" as the wages involved were quite high. But it might depend on how badly Hull/Sunderland need him to go out. Will try and get a word from DF on the subject later.

The Bolton News: Chris Eagles has no wish to leave Wanderers

Thrown out a question on Twitter on the Chris Eagles point raised earlier. Should Wanderers extend his contract and capitalise on a good scoring record in the Championship or cut loose in the summer?

11:21am

Yes. Although the scouting network isn't just blokes sat in the stand any more. It's linked in with the analysis department, headed up by Brian Prestidge.

But do you think the players on Premier league wages are harbouring DF putting his stamp on the team? I think Eagles is good but it seems he plays well in spells. And barely gets a chance away from home.

It restricts the manager in as much as FFP doesn't allow him to bring any more players in. And it's not the players' faults - just a fact of life for any side who comes down from 11 years in the Premier League perhaps?

11:08am

The Bolton News: Yann Kermorgant celebrates scoring from the spot

Little snippet from elsewhere in the Championship - Bournemouth have bid £400,000 for Charlton's Yann Kermorgant, who scored a couple against Wanderers last season if memory serves. Good player on his day.

11:05am

Don't think there will be any contract negotiations (made public) until the club are safe from relegation.

I personally would want to keep Eagles on - but I'm not privvy to the negotiations, so it may well be a financial decision in the end.

There has never been an actual bid for Chungy, by anyone. Lots of interest, much of which comes from his management team but no real offers.

I'd like to think he can go and have a great World Cup in the summer and see what happens from there.

11:03am

Lots of questions there...

11:03am

11:00am Tue 28 Jan 14

J J J J says

With a few of our players out of contract and some of them seeming unwilling to move on (Mears) when given the opportunity do you think the rest of the players out of contract are just going to let their contract run down? With Eagles I know he said he loves Bolton but I have seen nothing about him signing another contract. Do you think we should look at moving him on to get a fee for him? likewise with some of the other players? Do we know if CYL is going to leave or will he stay? there has been interest from a few clubs but that was in the summer, With all these players on premier league wages do you think it is harbouring DF putting his stamp on the side?

11:00am

There's a bit of confusion about this. I always thought it was 5pm last night - but I'm told that is now only for the cup competitions. DF said at the press conference yesterday that they could theoretically complete the deal this morning and then still have him feature (albeit probably from the bench).

10:58am

Honestly. No. You can never really tell - and there are obviously players who Wanderers would listen to offers for, but I've got a feeling there won't be much serious movement other than a couple of youngsters out on loan (maybe).

10:57am

And I happen to know of one club who are very interested in taking Clough on loan. Saving that for the paper...

10:57am

10:54am Tue 28 Jan 14

J J J J says

Also what do you think about our youth strikers? it certainly seems like Clough can score, worth a chance on the bench with a possibility of a cameo appearances in games until a loan comes through where he can play regularly? Wilkinson likewise?

I thought Clough, Wilkinson and Youngs were lively last night.

Clough and Youngs have got good footballing brains, quick feet and their movement is good - I just wonder whether their size counts against them in the modern game?

Wilkinson has the tools to be the complete package, for me. But all three of them need to get out on loan and get some League One/Two football - get kicked around a little bit to see if they can really make it.

Having been targeted by most of the football pundits as one of the teams expected to be in the automatic promotion spots, this season has become an unmitigated disaster. Whichever way you look at it DF must shoulder the blame, confidence is at rock bottom and I cannot see incoming loan players altering the status quo. All season we have been fed a conveyor belt of patronising excuses, the team has delivered nothing, absolutely zero. DF constantly comes out with stupid, almost ignorant statements to the press which insults the average intelligence of everyone. Where is the common sense in saying the first 25 minutes are important tonight or that we are two strikers away from being a top team, both utterly meaningless just like his performance as manager.

What is the latest on McNaughton? still a chance of him returning after Cardiff have signed Fabio? Will we be seeing any permanent signings this window?

Think most of the business will be "loan to buy" - as so many things seem to be nowadays.

I know there is still hope that McNaughton can happen. Not least from the Wanderers fans.

10:52am

I think Pepe Mel gave us good news when he said Dawson would be allowed out on loan!
I wouldn't read too much into the one-month thing. Most managers say that but realistically if there is no place in the side for Dawson at the moment, and he's getting regular football in a decent side, deals have a habit of being extended.
BUT... Wigan and a whole host of other Championship clubs will have heard what Mel had to say too.

10:50am

I'm also hoping that Yannick Bastos' transfer can be confirmed today.

The Luxembourg press seem fairly confident it will...

10:48am

Not 100 per cent sure on the length of the deal - but hoping it will be announced soon.

10:47am

Hoping that Jutkiewicz will be announced soon. Club were just tying up loose ends last night on the deal.
After that, it's a case of hoping Premier League clubs allow players out before deadline day - otherwise it's a fortnight wait for the loan window to open.
Hopes were raised a bit by what Pepe Mel said last night (see below), and there's Danny Graham still in the mix too. Should be interesting times.

10:44am

From what I saw of him last night, he's a strong lad, willing to put himself around. But after a bright start he seemed to wilt and was substituted mid-way through the second half. Perhaps a lack of recent football was the issue.

But a left-back... A specialist left-back!

10:42am

The Bolton News:

Here's the fella - 20 years old and with experience in Italian and French football.

He can count Cesena, Marseille and Ajaccio on his CV but left the latter after just six months, on the same day as shamed ex-Chelsea striker Adrian Mutu, no less.

The Bolton News: Andy Lonergan keeping calm

Turning our attention to tonight in West London - Dougie Freedman has assured Andy Lonergan that he is still the number one despite his error in the FA Cup against Cardiff City.

10:18am

We all know how well Dawson did last time - and people close to him say he's up for the idea of a second loan spell. But I have been warned that Wigan Athletic are dead serious about signing him too, so we'll have to see how that unfolds.

10:17am

But late last night a particularly appetising story emerged for Wanderers fans to consider - West Brom boss Pepe Mel admitted for the first time that he is considering sending Craig Dawson out on loan. Check the story here.

10:16am

Loads went on yesterday - David Ngog went to Swansea, and news emerged of a striker target in Middlesbrough's Lukas Jutkiewicz - who may yet feature tonight against QPR

With our youth strikers I don't think size matters because you look at the likes of Messi, Mata. Surely worth a place on the bench for Wilkinson until a loan deal can come through and do what we have been doing with Odelusi (who I have been impressed with might I add) and just give them little cameo's?

All season we have been fed a conveyor belt of patronising excuses, the team has delivered nothing, absolutely zero. DF constantly comes out with stupid, almost ignorant statements to the press which insults the average intelligence of everyone. Where is the common sense in saying the first 25 minutes are important tonight or that we are two strikers away from being a top team, both utterly meaningless just like his performance as manager.

FFP limits are different per league and, again, different in EU competitions.

I find it daft that half the time in football folk want contracts/business dealings similar to 'regular' jobs/working directives yet in other things they want seemingly bizarre rules and regs like FFP, transfer windows and squad specification (the latter, incidentally, doesn't even apply to all EU leagues!)

What say you Marc?

i agree with the comments, i don't think there is any kind of physical element in our team, we used to bully teams like Arsenal, Wenger hated coming to the Reebok, back to basics are needed and a change of formation, big Sam loved the 4,3,3 and it can quickly change to 4,5,1 when defending(which we cannot do, we couldn't tackle a full English breakfast at the moment).
We desperately need McNaughton, Dawson, any kind of real left back!!! and Pratley to fire on all cylinders again, great box to box work rate on his day, if only Nobby was back!!!
