AMIR Khan took a major step towards his dream fight with Floyd Mayweather when he won a vote organised by the American.

Pound-for-pound world number one Mayweather asked people to decide on Twitter whether he should fight the Bolton star or Marcos Maidana in his next fight on May 3 in Las Vegas.

"I'm going to let the fans vote. Tell me who I should fight next. Khan or Maidana," said the man who is unbeaten in 45 career fights when he launched the vote last week.

And Khan won the worldwide poll with a reported 60 per cent of the 35,000 votes.

Khan, who beat Maidana four years ago, was losing the vote in the early stages until he appealed to his own Twitter followers.

Khan pulled out of talks to fight Devon Alexander in December when it became clear he was in the running to become Mayweather's next opponent.
