Barrow Raiders 8 Leigh Centurions 52

The Bolton News: Ryan Brierley ran the show for Leigh Centurions Ryan Brierley ran the show for Leigh Centurions

LEIGH Centurions travelled to Barrow for their first away trip of the Kingstone Press Championship on Sunday, looking to build on their impressive 52-12 opening-day victory over Batley and they ran in nine tries in a convincing win.

The highlight of the game was Ryan Brierley’s five try show but there was so much more behind this Leigh performance as the pack once again blasted their opposition.

Blustery conditions at the home of Barrow Raiders made things difficult for both sides but Leigh had first use of the gale force wind and took the lead when Brierley carved through the home defence from a scrum.

Ridyard kicked the first of five first-half goals before Barrow responded with a try in the corner from Scott Turner.

The remainder of the first quarter was pretty close before Sam Barlow and Bob Beswick rumbled forward to the Raiders line and Brierley escaped a tackle to claim his second.

Brierley then turned creator for Beswick to finish emphatically and the power in Leigh’s ranks was emphasised when Tommy Goulden stretched over.

A break from Matty Sarsfield was converted to a try by Gregg McNally and by the time the half-time hooter sounded Leigh led 30-4.

The second half brought as much joy as the first with Leigh finding their scoring groove after seven minutes through that man Brierley. Ridyard then made a fourth try for his halfback partner before Barrow claimed their second try from a kick through Turner.

Leigh finished strongly with two tries in the final quarter with Tom Spencer bowling his way over the line before Brierley collected a kick and sped away to complete his haul with Ridyard unable to add to his eight goals.
