BOLTON Lads and Girls Club came from behind three times to beat Atherton Town on penalties and progress to the third round of the Sam Ashworth Trophy.

Atherton, fourth in Division One, took the lead against the Division Three outfit in the first half through Dayrl Martinus, but Allen Mitchell levelled for BLGC before the break.

The game continued to see-saw, with Jimmy Reynolds twice equalising for BLGC – once in normal time after Dave Fashou had put Atherton back in front and again in extra-time after Gary Peachey had made it 3-2 before the minnows clinched the tie 5-4 on penalties.

BLGC face another tough task in the quarter finals against Division One’s second-placed side Daten.

Division Two’s Turton Bay Mare held their own in the last eight against Division One leaders Cheers Bar before finally losing 4-2 on penalties.

The sides shared six goals in a thrilling extra time after the game had ended 0-0 after 90 minutes.

Simon Jackson (two) and David Barrett were on the scoresheet for Cheers while Andy Clarke, Adam Burke and Stewart Williams found the net for Turton.

Division One side Salford Waggon set up a semi-final tie with the league leaders after David Beaumont scored the only goal of their quarter-final tie against Queen Lizzie.

David Hanlon scored twice as Radcliffe Old Boys B beat Elton Liberals 2-1 to reach the final of the Division Three Cup.

Daten’s 6-1 victory over Pineapple was the pick of the weekend’s league action. They moved to within two points of Division One leaders Cheers thanks to Christopher Burnett’s double and a goal apiece from Chris Burrows, Luke Downs, Stuart Boddy and Mathew O’Boyle.

Both Crossguns and Ainsworth B kept their Division Three title hopes alive with key victories.

Mickey Jefferson hit five for Ainsworth in their 6-2 win at home to Golborne Parkside while Ian Mulqueeney and Phil Hornby were on target in their 3-0 victory over Failsworth Home Guard.
