Southampton starlet Andy Robinson in Bolton Wanderers squad for Wigan Athletic derby
WANDERERS fans may get a fleeting glimpse of new signing Andy Robinson today – but Dougie Freedman is promising they will see plenty more of him in the future.
The Southampton midfielder was picked up on loan for the rest of the season, after which it is believed he will sign on a permanent deal from St Mary’s.
Robinson is pencilled in to make the bench against Wigan Athletic today but is, assures Freedman, capable of stepping in right away at first team level as a midfield alternative to Jay Spearing or Medo Kamara.
“He’ll be straight into the squad,” he said. “I think it’s a fantastic little bit of business for us, I really do. His pedigree is unbelievable, he just needs an opportunity.
“Southampton are just in a different position than us right now and players have got to be at a certain level to break into their first team. If they think he’s not at the level to play first team then they will let him go elsewhere.
“I jumped in there and hopefully he’ll get an opportunity over the coming weeks.
“I know the full story with the kid. He was very close to getting in there at one point but when they got into the Premier League they went and bought Victor Wanayama for £12million and emergence of a few others has meant he went down in the pack a little bit.
“But he’s certainly a very good football player and to get him on loan, for now, is good.”
