MIDFIELDER Jay Spearing says this season is ending too soon for the in-form Wanderers.

The 2-1 win at Doncaster Rovers on Tuesday night stretched the Whites unbeaten run on the road to six matches and they have lost just once in 11 Championship outings.

It is a streak that has lifted them to 14th in the table but the run has come too late to have any chance of a late dash to the play-offs.

Spearing concedes the bad start, that saw them go 10 games without a league win, has cost them that opportunity.

But he still hopes the good form continues against Barnsley on Saturday and right through to the end of the campaign.

The Liverpudlian said: “We are disappointed in the way the season has gone.

“We haven’t kicked on as quickly as we wanted to.

“In the first couple of weeks of the season it was disappointing we didn’t finish teams off the way we are doing now.

“Our run of form has come at the wrong time at the end of the season.

“But we are on a run and we want to keep it going.

“If we want to do anything in the future, it’s important we end this season on a high and go and kick on next season.

“We need to get this club back to where it belongs and in the Premier League.”

Recent displays certainly point to a brighter future for Wanderers if boss Dougie Freedman can keep the nucleus of the squad he currently has in place for next season.

Spearing believes the ability to adapt to different formations and the added goal threat they now possess has been key in the recent upturn in fortunes – as was evident at Doncaster.

He added: “We always believe if we get chances and take them early doors, we can beat anyone.

“We know we have the players up front and coming from midfield who can create and take those chances.

“Maybe we rushed a few things one or two times to finish Doncaster off but we could have scored a few more at the end and were unlucky not to.

“In the first half an hour we were in complete control of the game.

“Every single one of us got in tune with the shape the gaffer wanted us to play.

“The gaffer wanted me to sit and get on the ball and play and I am happy to do that.

“Medo, Dannsy and Chungy can all swap and interchange in the hole behind the striker and they are all very capable of understanding that role.

“The four of us interchanged really well in the first half and we controlled the game and that set up the win.

“Hopefully, we can keep doing that.”
