Bolton Wanderers – clarification

We published a story about Bolton Wanderers' dispute with the taxman over reclaimed VAT.
We inappropriately used the word “fined” when describing the club’s settlement with HMRC.
The club was not “fined”, but reached a commercial settlement with HMRC by paying £1.8 million.
This was part of a football industry-wide enquiry by HMRC into the tax treatment of agency fees involving all Premier League clubs.
Reporting the same case, we said that the agent used by the club to find a new manager had been accused by the BBC’s Panorama programme of taking “bungs”.
We must stress that there was no suggestion made to the court that the club itself was involved in any such improper activity or that there was anything improper about the club’s recruitment of a new manager.
