MATCHDAY LIVE: Sheffield Wednesday 1 Bolton Wanderers 3

This live event has finished

4:54pm

All over - superb stuff from Wanderers. Match report up soon.

4:54pm

Think the announcer read his name as Iliev.

4:53pm

Tom Youngs on now for Chung-Yong.

4:46pm

Kellett dances round Lee and pulls a great cross back for Chungy - who hits the side netting.

4:46pm

Kellett drawing more songs from the Wanderers fans - great to see.

4:45pm

Afobe for Coke

4:44pm

Attendance 23,070 - quite some effort.

4:41pm

Great save from Kirkland - Juke's cross and Danns' powerful effort.

4:40pm

So that's Juke up front. Kellett playing in midfield.

4:40pm

"He's one of our own" sing the Wanderers fans.

4:39pm

It's Kellett for Beckford.

4:38pm

Kellett coming on for Wanderers.

4:33pm

Jutkiewicz on for Hall

4:32pm

Threlkeld gets forward and links up with Chungy. Good cross too, cleared for a throw.

4:31pm

Jutkiewicz serenaded by the Wanderers fans as he warms up - "Dougie, sig him up"

4:28pm

Danns has been excellent today - just doesn't stop working.

4:27pm

Wonder how long Jutkiewicz will stay out of this game. Need to hold on to the ball a bit better.

4:25pm

Important defending from Mills - Wanderers looked stretched at the back.

4:21pm

Next goal looks really vital here.

4:20pm

Double sub for Wednesday

Stobbs and Corry on

Mattock and McCabe off

4:19pm

Nuhiu booked for blocking Trotter's free kick.

4:18pm

Hall takes the free kick and curls it just over.

4:17pm

Both booked.

4:16pm

Beckford and Onyewu clash on the edge of the box. Becks shoves the Owls defender out of the way.

4:14pm

Beckford and Hall combine to give Chungy a decent chance - but his attempted chip is too heavy.

4:13pm

Threlkeld booked for a foul on Mattock.

4:08pm

Great goalkeeping by Kirkland. Chungy played Danns clean through, he tried to get round him but the ex-Liverpool man pushed out a hand to snatch the ball.

4:07pm

Hall brought down 20 yards out after some good interplay with Chungy and Danns.

4:05pm

4:05pm

Two Unlimited plays in the second half.

3:51pm

Well, what a half. Wanderers could have had six in the first half hour and fully deserved their three. But the Mattock strike has just put a few doubts in their minds.

3:50pm

3:49pm

Lavery's cross-shot rebounds off the outside of the post as a breathless half comes to an end. Great game to watch.

3:48pm

Danns' effort gets through the wall but gathered by Kirkland.

3:47pm

Break was on there for Wanderers - Danns eventually denied by a last gasp challenge by Helan. Hall then brought down on edge of the box.

3:44pm

Wednesday just fancying themselves a little bit more now. Four minutes to ride out for the Whites.

3:42pm

I'd love to know how quick that ball was travelling. It was like a Sneekes special.

3:41pm

So as I said earlier, typical end-of-season fayre.

3:41pm

Corner was cleared to the edge of the box - he absolutely pelted a left footed shot into the top corner. Bogdan didn't move.

3:40pm

What a hit for Mattock! Better than Trotter's, in fact.

3:38pm

Onyewu had better hope the US scouts are not watching. Ream has had a decent game, though.

3:37pm

Beckford through again! Onside this time, but forgot to take the ball with him.

3:37pm

Helan gets on the end of Lavery's cross. Heads down into the turf and it's saved easily by Bogdan.

3:36pm

Beckford has the ball in the net but he's offside again. Wednesday lost the ball for the umpteenth time near half way and with a better run, that would have been four.

3:34pm

"We're Bolton Wanderers, we're taking the @#$%" comes the chant from the away fans.

3:33pm

But that's playing down how well Wanderers have opened them up at times.

3:32pm

Actually, they have been abysmal pretty much everywhere.

3:32pm

Boos ringing round Hillsborough - Wednesday have been abysmal at the back so far.

3:32pm

What a hit from Trotter! Ball sat up nicely for him and he smashed a looping shot past Kirkland from 25 yards. Great stuff.

3:31pm

Liam Trotter!

3:28pm

Early days, of course, but Wanderers have had this tactically spot on so far.

3:25pm

Offside trap nearly sprung again by Beckford. I say nearly, it wasn't, but he looks like getting in on goal with every attack.

3:23pm

McCabe drills a low shot through a sea of bodies in the box. Bogdan down smartly right near his post - may actually have touched the woodwork.

3:22pm

What a start for Wanderers - bad positioning from Mattock allowed Chung-Yong to run clear in on goal. He scuffed his shot, which totally wrong-footed Kirkland and the ball dribbled into the back of the net.

3:21pm

Chung-Yong Lee!

3:20pm

Antonio blasts a volley over the bar. Wednesday's best chance so far.

3:19pm

Neil Danns (foul on McCabe)

3:19pm

Beckford's pace got him in behind Loovens again. Not much backing him up though and the chance was gone.

3:15pm

Beckford flagged offside again after a good ball from Danns - looked only a fraction, but the home defenders can't defend this high all day.

3:14pm

Wheater knocks it long for Beckford again - massive gap in the Wednesday back line.

3:13pm

Beckford offside again, incredibly late flag. Seems to be Wanderers' ploy to knock it direct for him.

3:12pm

Beckford flagged offside to ironic cheers around Hillsborough.

3:11pm

Great start for Wanderers. They had gone really close with Mils' header.

3:11pm

Think Wednesday were appealing for offside, major hesitation in their defence as Beckford got to the byline and rolled a ball across the area for Danns to knock home.

3:10pm

Danns scores!

3:09pm

Mills heads at goal - took a tiny touch off Loovens and looped up over the bar. Very, very close.

3:08pm

Wheater does well to win a corner after Hall's free kick. Bit of wing play there.

3:06pm

About 1,500 Wanderers fans away to my left making a good noise. Surrounded by swathes of empty seats though.

3:05pm

Jermaine Beckford flagged offside for the first time today.

3:04pm

All stemmed from mistake by Ream near corner flag.

3:04pm

Ball falls for Giles Coke 20 yards out. His low shot saved by Bogdan.

3:02pm

3:01pm

Jeff Beck strikes up... kick-off looming.

3:00pm

Liam Palmer just awarded the official SWFC player of the year by his manager. Not involved today after breaking his foot against Charlton recently.

2:58pm

Teams coming out on to the pitch. Wanderers in neon orange for the last time this season.

2:57pm

Wanderers looking to extend an unbeaten away record to eight games - their best run since 2001, today.

Now there is only one chance left for Ty Mears to join BWC in this campaign but on the other hand he has avoided all the weird moves from DF! Good luck to Mears, Eagles and all the others who will be leaving BWFC soon!

I wouldn't hold your breath...

2:56pm

2:54pm

Chris Maguire given the day off by Wednesday to attend his grandmother's funeral.

2:52pm

Giant arena Hillsborough - and filling up quite well considering there's not much to play for today.

2:50pm

Swing version of "Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor" going on at the moment. Strange.

2:48pm

I'd imagine he's sussing out new clubs.

2:47pm

It'd be a short line, though...

2:47pm

They'd probably do the Conga at Wanderers if I called it a day tomorrow...

2:46pm

The club gave him a little presentation and a glass trophy.

2:46pm

Just found out that Paul Thompson, one of the legends of the local journo circuit, is doing his last home game today for the Sheffield Star.

2:40pm

Few fans upset that Hayden White has not stayed in the squad. I understand it was a pre-agreed thing - Oscar Threlkeld getting this game.

sun is shining and its shining because a win is on the cards and the youth teamers are on the bench too :D this is a good day to smile

2:38pm

Good luck to Oscar - but a few young faces on the bench today too. Andy Robinson, Tom Youngs, Andy Kellett and Georg Iliev.

2:36pm

So after waiting eight years for a Bolton lad to make his debut in Andy Kellett, two come along at once.

2:36pm

Big day for Oscar Threlkeld - a 20-year-old right-back from Farnworth, I believe.

2:35pm

Taking me back to my Sheffield uni days...

2:34pm

But at least I've had some superb music to listen to.

2:34pm

And it's also a hard-wired internet connection, which is a real rarity at grounds (and not one my computer particularly takes to very well).

2:33pm

It's a fair old trek from press room to press box at this giant ground.

2:33pm

Right, OK. Ready now.

2:17pm

SWFC subs: Martinez, Best, Corry, Stobbs, Llera, Afobe, Johnson

2:16pm

SWFC team: Kirkland, Antonio, Onyewu, Coke, McCabe, Helan, Mattock, Lee, Lavery, Nuhiu, Loovens

2:07pm

BWFC subs: Lonergan, Knight, Jutkiewicz, Youngs, Robinson, Iliev, Kellett

2:04pm

That's a debut for Radcliffe's own Oscar Threlkeld!

2:04pm

BWFC team: Bogdan; Threlkeld, Mills; Wheater, Ream; Chung-Yong, Spearing, Trotter, Danns, Hall; Beckford.

2:00pm

Real whiff of end-of-season about this one - both teams marooned in mid-table. Wanderers could theoretically finish 13th this season, but could also drop as low as 17th.

1:59pm

Teams shouldn't be far away. But Dougie Freedman was pledging to give the kids a chance if his injury situation did not clear.

1:58pm

Good afternoon and welcome to Hillsborough for the penultimate Matchday Live of the season!

MEMORABLE MATCHES

3/8/1890
FA Cup semi-final
Wanderers 1 The Wednesday 2

Goals had been flying in for Wanderers in only their second full season in the Football League.
Their cup run had seen them beat Belfast Distilery 10-2, then set a club record with a 13-0 triumph over Sheffield United before a 3-2 win over Preston set-up a semi-final at the Kent Oval.
Unfortunately The Wednesday, as they were then known, proved a tougher prospect than their Steel City neighbours – Albert Mumford and Tom Cawley cancelling out James McNee’s goal for Bolton.
Wednesday lost 6-1 to Blackburn Rovers in the final.

8/5/1982
Second Division
Wanderers 3 Sheffield Wednesday 1

It had been a fairly depressing season for George Mulhall’s men, who just a fortnight earlier had been hit for seven on QPR’s famous plastic pitch.
That result sparked an upturn in form, however, and having despatched Derby County a week earlier with Chris Thompson scoring twice in a 3-2 win, they topped off the season with three points against the Owls.
Jeff Chandler, Alan Gowling and Tony Henry did the damage on the day, meaning Wanderers had climbed five places from 20th to 15th inside a week.

1/1/1996
Premier League
Wanderers 2 Sheffield Wednesday 4

Roy McFarland was sacked and Colin Todd appointed sole manager after a home defeat against the Owls left Wanderers in serious relegation trouble.
Sasa Curcic and Gerry Taggart had got Bolton back level after Dark Kovacevic’s double put David Pleat’s Wednesday into a commanding half-time lead.
But David Hirst had the final say, scoring twice in 20 second-half minutes to consign Wanderers to their 16th defeat of the campaign.
They would climb off the foot of the table only once in the rest of the season, after gaining a measure of revenge with a 2-1 win over Wednesday a few months later.

FOOT IN BOTH CAMPS

Jermaine Johnson
Wanderers – 2001-2003
Wednesday – 2007-present

Johnson joined Wanderers from Jamaican side Tivoli Gardens in 2001 and made his debut aged 21 in a 1-1 draw with Arsenal in September 2001.
After spells at Oldham Athletic and Bradford City, the Jamaican international joined Wednesday and has made over 200 appearances for the Owls.

Fred Kean
Wednesday – 1920-1928
Wanderers – 1928-1931

England international Kean played right half during his 14 year playing career and captained his country on one occasion.
After 230 games for the Owls, he joined Wanderers in 1928 and made 80 appearances, scoring just the once before moving to Luton Town where he ended his career.

Chris Eagles
Wednesday – 2005
Wanderers – 2011-present

For the first half of the 2005/06 season, Eagles was loaned from Manchester United to Hillsborough and scored his first of three goals during his loan spell in a derby match with Leeds United.
A loan spell with Dutch side N.E.C. Nijmegen followed, before his move to the Reebok Stadium in 2011 via three years at Burnley. This season, Eagles has made just 16 league appearances and his contract with the Whites runs out this summer.

The Bolton News: Leon Best has been in decent form for the Owls since joining on loan. Picture: Action Images

ONE TO WATCH – Leon Best

The on-loan Blackburn Rovers striker has scored some important goals for the Owls since crossing the Pennines in February.
Filling the void left by Connor Wickham when he moved on to Leeds United, Best has scored four of his seven goals this season for Wednesday, who have won every game in which he has found the net.

1:52pm

WEDNESDAY TEAM NEWS

Injuries are stacking up for Owls boss Stuart Gray, with no recognised right-backs now available.
Keiron Lee will make the switch from midfield after Liam Palmer limped out of the 3-2 defeat against Charlton on Monday.
Gray has hinted that he could turn to youth – with highly-rated winger Jack Stobbs lined up for a debut. Franck Betra, Taylor McKenzie and Paul Corry are also poised to make the step up from the development squad.
Likely line-up (4-4-2): Kirkland, Lee, Onyewu, Loovens, Mattock, Maguire, Coke, Corry, Antonio, Best, Nuhiu
