FLOYD Mayweather’s relentless sparring with Amir Khan over a potential match-up could reach fever pitch next month when the American, pictured, keeps a date in the Bolton superstar’s home town.
Mayweather, regarded as the best fighter in the world, is to top the bill at the Reebok Stadium’s Premier Suite at a £200-a-head sportsman’s dinner on Monday, June 23.
And the British businessman who has brokered the deal reckons Khan’s people have already shown an interest in being in the audience when the world champion takes part in a question and answer session.
“Floyd Mayweather Jnr is going to walk into a building with his “Money Team” in Amir Khan’s back yard...I have to pinch myself that he’s really coming over here,” said Spencer Brown of the Blackpool-based sports broker business EBF, who have signed contracts to set up the event.
“It’s the stuff legends are made of.”
Confirmation that Bolton has been selected as one of six venues on the England leg of Mayweather’s world tour comes at a time when the boxing world is buzzing at the prospect of the pound-for-pound king agreeing to a showdown with Khan.
The pair fought on the same bill at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Saturday when both had points victories.
Mayweather successfully defended his world welterweight titles against Marcos Maidana while Khan scored a landmark victory over Luis Collazo on his debut in the 147lb division in his first fight for more than a year.
Khan may have to wait until next year before he gets the chance he has been dreaming of after ruling out a match-up in September because of Ramadan and pressure on Mayweather to agree to a re-match with Maidana after the Argentine ran him close in last weekend’s main event.
But chances are the 27-year-old Bolton star could be an interested spectator at the Reebok next month when Mayweather swaps his gloves for the microphone.
“I’m sure it would be very interesting and would add spice to the night if Khan turns up – and we’ve already had enquiries from them (Khan’s camp),” added Brown, who specialises in brokering tours by legendary boxers – Sugar Ray Leonard having recently toured and Roberto Duran lined up for a future visit.
“It will be fantastic for Bolton anyway.
“It’s not a cheap do but Mayweather is flying in by private jet for the England leg of his world tour with 10 of his entourage – the “Money Team” who have arranged it all “I don’t think they necessarily know where Bolton is, but the Premier Suite is a massive venue. Not many places in the North West can hold 1,000.
“From Las Vegas to Bolton... I still shake my head at the thought of it.”
