THE stars aligned for the Shuttleworth family at Bradshaw last weekend as father and son, David and Will, both scored centuries playing in the same match.

Will, aged 15, hit his first ever senior ton, scoring 114 not out after opening the batting for Eagley, while his dad came in at number five to weigh in with a quick-fire 101.

The pair shared a remarkable stand of 220 after coming together at the crease with the visitors teetering at 30-3.

But while their best efforts were ultimately in vain as Bradshaw edged to victory, all the talk after the match was about the historic centuries.

“It was unbelievable,” said David, aged 45, who has played for Eagley for 22 years.

“I have won a lot of things in the Bolton League over the years, but nothing comes close to being part of that.

“To be at the crease with my son and be part of him scoring his first ever senior ton was awesome – the best feeling ever.”

David’s dad, Jeff, was part of a packed balcony watching the innings unfold, while his brother, James, batted at number four.

“It was great to have all the family there when it happened,” he added.

“Everyone was cheering us on and one of the lads was even filming the final moments.

“I don’t think it has ever been done before, so everyone was very excited.”

David recently gave up playing for the first team to play alongside his son in the seconds.

Big things are expected of Will, who has captained Lancashire for the past four years, from Uunder-11s up to u15s. He has also turned out for the Red Rose u18s and had a trial for the North of England team on Monday, following in his grandad Jeff’s footsteps.

But it hasn’t all been plain sailing for the talented Sharples pupil.

“I think the extra pressure of the Lancs captaincy has affected his form, and he has been struggling for runs,” said David.

“So I decided to step down to our seconds and play a bit of cricket with my son.

“Things have definitely been improving in recent weeks.

“If he can just knuckle down and score regularly for the seconds then I can definitely see him breaking through to the first team next year.”

Eagley’s senior side are still searching for their first win and face a tough trip to local rivals Egerton tomorrow, who will be eager to bounce back from defeat at Bradshaw last weekend.

“Winning isn’t everything for a club like Eagley – we just want our members to enjoy their cricket and hopefully be competitive,” added David.

“A lot of our first teamers are still at university, so I think when they break up for summer our results will improve.

“But you never know, if Will keeps on performing the way he has been then he may get a few more first-team games than he bargained for.”
